    Hi Folks!
Taking my 71 year old dad out on the big lake this coming Friday for a bucket list kind of thing. We are renting a boat out of Wahkon Bay and I want to get him on some smallmouth. Looks like a slightly colder (56 degrees) and windy day (west winds 15mph). Is it reasonable to think we can “hide” a little bit from wind in Wahkon Bay and fish around Half Moon Island? Or would the west shore be a better bet? I am most familiar with area around Isle but wanted to see/try something different.

Have read a good deal on this forum and other places about Mille Lacs fall SMB. We are thinking slow presentations with tubes and swimbaits as well as throwing crankbaits to bump off rocks. Thanks for any insights!

    David Luke:

With the timing of your trip, you might be ok in the confines of Wahkon, but I would think that trying to be close to the deepest water might have some benefits that you might not have on the south end without getting out in the wind… Trying the west side near Pike Point, Seguchie to Brown’s, Shah-bush-kung and Indian points may get you closer to deep water if necessary while keeping the wind to some kind of minimum… Last I saw SMB’s were hanging in 8′ – 14′ to as deep as the mid – 20′ range.

Having said all of that, some of the bass guys may have a better idea of what’s going on as I haven’t fished for bass in a bit…
