Planning on going out on Sat May 14th to target some smallmouth. I’ve heard great things about upper st. Croix smalley fishing! The plan is to pitch plastics from Taylor Falls down to Osceola. I’ve heard prime smalley territory is further north, but are they still abundant in this area?

They are in there but the average size is nowhere near other stretches. Water was low enough to find bottom last weekend if you did not know where to go.

Not to be a Debbie downer but border waters with Wisconsin doesn’t open tell the 28th. I remembered that it did not follow the early season c&r last year and also this year.

Ah yeah was gonna say not open yet. Anyway these fish can be spooked easy or are very wary.

Some spots, you only need one cast and there’s a fish there. Some other spots, you need to work it like 30-60 minutes, before the fish will bite, cuz you have to put it on a certain spot/zone/depth or have just the right action/pause.
