I normally fish walleye but am heading up to the pond to do some smallmouth fishing Saturday.
I fish smallmouth in Canada which is essentially jig and plastics pitch and retrieve for 100 fish days.
Looking for info on how to effectively target them at this point in the season on Mille Lacs.
We are planning on fishing the reefs now the east side in 8-18 feet of water and just wanted to see what techniques are especially effective right now?

    Looking for donkeys not numbers.

Learn from the best. Do some youtube searching on Seth Feider and Mille Lacs Smallies or Feider and Tube fishing. You will find a ton of very informative videos that will get ya key-ed in.

I was up a couple of weeks ago. I used chigger craws on a 1/8 oz jig. Did well for size

Find boulders and pitch plastics or drop shot them.

Use your electronics to find isolated boulders and look for arches, but drop shot them anyway. KVD Dream shots, but my favorite is to drag Ned Rigs over rock. If your Ned rig isn’t getting stuck in rocks, you’re in the wrong place. Zeb’s colonize on hard strata, so if your snagging Zebs, keep fishing there. ML has a zillion craws, red to orange in color so stay with darker hues. Drag, not jig. try 20-24 ft. Except in the Fall there are no 100 fish days. Remember “Free the Fighter”

I wasn’t up last weekend for the first weekend this summer, but I have been having decent luck with tubes on the rock piles. Most recently I have been finding bigger fish in 10 plus feet of water. The smaller ones are still up in 4-10′ and there are plenty of them. Also had good luck pulling red or orange cranks over deeper rocks 15-20′. I will be up tonight to see how things are going.

I have been doing well with Ned Rigs also. Buzz, What types of plastics and colors are you using? Black TRD is working best for me.
