Will be fishing a smallmouth lake that is clear and rocky-should be crayfish in there also smelt in the lake. Never have heard of fishing SMB at night but I know my friend the vampire will want to try. Any ideas?
    Thanks

Areas with ambient light can be phenomenal

Casting tubes onto the rock flats and ledges can be awesome.

For LmBs at night i’ve heard its good to use a steady retrieve, let them find it-true for brownie too? Other tips? Location?

They will certainly strike at night. I’d cast topwaters over shallow rocks if you can find them. Epic when they hit. I can say this after many years night fishing for muskie using topwater and big smallmouth would surprise with nice bonus catches. Black or dark colored surface baits like hawg wobbler… whistling

I personally can only stand catfishing at night or any still bait fishing with live bait.

The sound of a hawg wobbler by the boat at night then a musky hits, if that don’t get the ticker pumping, your dead but just don’t know it!

I’m a coward. After burying a treble in my finger last summer I just can’t see fishing with treble hooks at night. Recipe for disaster for me anyway. cry

Id try topwaters. Loud ones, quiet ones, fastbones, and slow ones. Should be a blast. Anything you use during the day should work also. Good luck!! Wearing some sort of glasses might save your eyes also in the case of a flying lure with sharp hooks or even just taking a weight to your eye.

Yup catmando, you been there too. Fishing those lakes in Vilas/Iron County WI…if they didn’t blow up on it during the retrieve, when you made that big “L” turn changing direction 6′ from the side of the boat. Yowza… shock

You should if targeting bass, try to find the “little” Hawg Wobbler. They will hit the bigger one’s but you would need heavier (musky) rod/reel to cast them. The little one can be used with medium spinning or bass type rod/reel combos just fine. And hang on!!

Nice steady retrieve. Also a good idea to scope out the spots during daylight so you can plan the night casting and positions. Take patience and sometimes a foot or two makes the entire difference.

Top waters, subsurface lures, and shallow cranks are generally my first picks. Inline spinners or Colorado blade spinnerbaits works well.

As mentioned above…Waters where there’s a overhead light, can be gems…

Upwards hook set ,fish miss game over, sidewise hook set fish miss the bait will skip ahead a bit, musky might hit again , I have had them blow up on a lure a couple times on the same cast,. Before getting hooks.Oh Upward hook set might send bait between your eyes.

Thanks A LOT that dang Hawg Wobbler was expensive! Musky dude at Thorne said it can really be a hot bait at times but the runnin and gunnin type musky guys don’t throw it because you have work it slow-looks cool. Alos got a jointed black jitterbug.
