I think a few on here are members of this as it pertains to Mille Lacs smallmouth. They are doing a monthly video update on how the bite is, water temps, lures, spawning, etc on the big lake. Its pretty good. There will be one every month from May – October. The first one was done by Jim DaRosa.

Did you watch it? I have never caught a bass on that lake using a topwater and that was the first lure he recommended. The trick of putting a piece of plastic in the marabou jig is a new one on me too.

Yeah that was pretty interesting. I was thinking about using a small plopper the next time I go up there if it’s fairly calm. They hammer them on the river.

Wish my boat was a couple feet longer so I wouldn’t have to worry about the wind up there so much….ha

Just pick a side mahto. They all have rocks if you pick the right side of the lake the wind is coming from you shouldn’t have a problem.

I’ve always had luck on smallies on that lake. Just depends where the wind allows me to go. I never go deeper then 12 to 15 ft and always do pretty good. Some days really really good. Multiple days with lots of fish over 21. More 6ish pound fish then anywhere I’ve ever targeted them.
My secret is, to say I’m going walleye fishing. Because then it’s a walleye free day and smallmouth is game on

Definitely true. My best day of smallmouth fishing up there was when I was going for walleye.

I generally do better in the spring during the prespawn bite. Once they spawn and move off into the abyss, not so much. Also seems to be better during the week when there’s less pressure.

I like using just a small piece of the Berkley “Heavy Weights” worm. Just a small piece can help a 1/16th oz hair jig get 20+% more distance, and jamming it up onto the hook shank makes the skirt flare a bit more when swimming in the water.

That looks good I will have to try it next time I’m tossing hair.

Earlier this year, in may, the only thing I could get bit out there was on top water, which I think was a first. Jerkbait, plastics, and hair didn’t do much that evening, but topwater did. It seems to have become a tricky lake the last handful of years with that immense added fishing pressure.

The tube bite never seems to die off up there. My nicest fish on that lake have been caught on a tube.
