With our local lake smallies seeming to like bright colors I did up the shallower crank bait in colors that I know they like in soft plastics. While the smallies are still relating to somewhat shallower water yet, I’ll be hanging hooks on this puppy today and giving it a goon run tomorrow.

Uhh, you know bass season is closed, right?

    It opens May 11.

Looks like a good color though.

    You’re good if you’re in pool 2, 3, 4, etc.

    Inland waters are closed.

Or Rainy river. Is the western boarder waters good to go also?

Those look great. The smallie’s should love them.

I just did some of these too. I used the hypershift colors that go from pink, purple, violet, to gold so it changes from tequila sunrise to green/gold. I was pretty pumped with the results cuz they look alot like yours and I agree that the smallies will love em.

The back is a thin black on the couple baits I painted like this and a hypershift/clear top coat sprayed over it so these light up like yours. Actually, I sprayed the whole baits with the top coat. Out in good sun and turned they are all over the place with color, but as you know, where the colors are darkest the shift in color is more dramatic.

We maybe watched the same video to get the Tequilla Sunrise pattern? I chased the blue down the sides a hair further than the video’s, but like the video’s end result better. Next time.

I was scratching my head but the boat next to me on p2 Saturday was pulling smb off the bottom in 15-18 fow. We were close enough to have a conversation and I got nothing but eyes in my boat. He was jigging more actively and they were snacking his baits.

Yeah probably same video I was watching it and looking at my paints on the table in front of me and I was like hey I have most of those colors in the galaxy dust and need to practice with those paints. Ended up with about 6 different lures some with better results than others. The little whopper plopper I did is the one I’m most excited about. This is my first year painting lures.

What a frikkin rabbit hole this airbrushing is. lol

I enjoy it. I’m not so much a detail guy as I am a color guy. Some of these guy that are experts at it can paint up lures that look like they’d flop if you touched them. I ain’t that kind of guy. lolk

I wonder if that’s the same size as a lucky craft b.d.s. 1? It sure looks similar.

The length that’s listed for this particular bait is just a hair under 2.7″ and .7″ from side to side at the widest.

I really haven’t paid a whole lot of attention to the retail market and what size the retail baits are. I know this bait will run at about 6 feet max.

I’m interested in painting lures. Can I use vinyl paint on a crankbait and put a clear coat over it? I would want to start with just using a paint brush before spending a bunch of money.

You’ll want to use an acrylic paint. That vinyl paint has a solvent base and it’ll eat up or melt the plastic in the blanks. You will want a sealer over the acrylic. Some use diamond plate, I use Seal Coat. Search the names on line and you’ll find sources for the sealers.

Yeah I agree with the acrylic and using an airbrush. The airbrush kit is about 90$ at harbor freight so not to expensive to start, the paints add up, and Diamond plate is 45$ a pint so thats really pricey. I painted about a dozen lures before finally buying the clearcoat. It lives in its own special hermetically sealed zone in my shop. Blanks are only about a buck a piece. for 200$ you can do a few dozen lures in a few different patterns. Not including hooks and split rings.
