Small outboard water pump question

1996 Suzuki 8 hp. A few weeks back I started trolling and very quickly the motor overheated and shut down. I started it again after a while and confirmed there was no water coming out of the pee hole or exhaust/water exit on the upper back of the shaft.
I completely rebuilt the water pump then took it out last night. Water is flying out of the exhaust and the engine does not get hot. But it still wont come out of the pee hole. I blew everything with compressed air when I had it apart and ran wire up it as far as I could multiple times. Any ideas?
Funny thing is my old 15hp Evinrude does the same thing.

Try checking the fitting in the engine block that the tattletale hose connects to. A lot of times, that fitting is plugged especially if the fitting is an elbow.

Check too if the little hose is connected to the pee hole. I have had them pop off so the water was squirting inside the cowling.

Unfortunately on this motor there is no hose and the connection is hidden under the engine. I may have to tear into it further. flame
I got it to drop a little with hose fitting and it dripped a few times last night but something is definitely not right.

How did the impeller look? Is it possible a small chunk of blade is lost in there somewhere, restricting or diverting water flow?

If it has a thermostat, it could be stuck shut with calcium or other buildup causing water to not reach the hose.

Not that I recall and I cant check now because I tossed it.

Good point. Either calcium or a hunk of the old impeller. Ill just have to dig into it. Good news is its cooling the engine so I can use it.

Let us know how it works out. I am getting ready to do the water pump and impeller on my 1990 6hp yamaha.

What did you find? I wouldn’t have bothered looking at the thermostat as it pees whether or not the thermostat is open or closed. Not to mention it would have still been over heating. My buddy had a similar problem and it was sand in the fitting. I had to take that fitting off and run wire in it.
