Hi. I am planning a trip to Story City, Iowa The last of September to deposits my wife at a quilting retreat for a week. To kill the time I would like to do some wading style fly fishing for smallies on some streams around the area. I am partial to small streams but any streams I can wade and can gain legal access to will make me happy. I am coming up from the Kansas City area. Any help will be appreciated.

If you go to Iowa DNR and look up South Skunk river there is 3 different areas you can fish. It talks about the different fish that is in the area. One is Heise Wildlife area. Mine you I have never been there but have found the web site helpful for trout fishing. It also has maps. Good luck and happy times ahead.

Mid to late September can be great central mn for smallies tight to the bank feeding on frogs. Fish a popper or dahlberg diver anywhere the grass is close to the water.
