So a weird phenomenon we encountered today that I have never seen nor heard of and wanted to see if any one else has…

Out on a river/flowage today for the first time in north central WI. Encountered thick slush under the ice that extended past the three foot dipper we had! I had a three foot dipper and rolled up my sleeves and stuck my arm with the dipper down and still felt slush!! It was thick and unfishable! We were in a area that typically has flow and about 8-13 fow. Had 4-6 inches of ice on top and 3″ snow on that.

No idea how or why this happened…anyone encounter this before??

Had it happen on red lake a couple years ago. I just assumed it was because part of the lake remained frozen and the wind busted up the skim ice and pushed it under the remaining ice. We were only fishing 7ft of water and I bet the slush was close to 2 ft thick….still caught plenty of fish below it though!

Run in to it all of the time on the Minnesota river. Not sure exactly what causes it, normally correlates with cold temperatures and snow, sometimes you can find clear pockets by moving around on the current seems, but those areas can also have less ice, be careful and good luck!
