mustad slow death hook, single bead, 4 foot leader, high quality barrel swivel.

Tie the hook on with a palomar knot and leave about a 1/4″ tag end on the knot. Slide the head of the crawler up over the knot and the tag works somewhat as a keeper for the crawler to stop it from sliding down.

I tie some rigs with two beads if I’m running 4mm beads. Usually only a single with a 6mm. Bead configurations, as small a difference as they are, can still make a difference.

mustad also makes them prepackaged with the bead and swivel ready to rock. I have used them and they seem to work just fine. But definitely cant argue beefing it up with a premium swivel and leader of your choice.
One tip just make sure your crawler is spinning before letting your line out. dont assume its good to go.

Do you use a whole crawler or part? What about leeches?

just a part of one. I try to leave a couple inches past the back of the hook. It seems like the if the worm gets too long they dont spin as well. I have not tried leeches.

Trokar 1/0 hands down. I can’t tell you how many big fish that I’ve lost to other brands due to a straightened out or broken hook.

As other’s mentioned before, a premium swivel is a must.

What do you lake guys prefer for a line for them in clear water? On the river (pool 4) I personally run 17 lb. XT on everything. Curious to hear the floro or mono debate and lb. test if it really matters at all.

12# XT. Fluorocarbon sinks, where mono is a little more buoyant. That’s my logic for using mono.

Same for me especially on the river. I see so many guys though rigging with floro an makes me curious

I have had good luck using the Gulp Alive pinched off crawlers instead of the real crawlers.

Gulp also makes a “killer crawler” specifically for slow death presentation.

The Berkley Gulp Killer Crawler does indeed work well on a slow death hook.
Unfortunately, its not really much more durable than a real crawler and priced at $5.99 per 10, its not a very good bargain at all.

The Berkley Gulp Alive Pinched crawler is slightly more durable for the same price.

The uncle josh 3″ pork crawler works well if you can get it threaded on the hook, the success of which varies depending on the toughness of the piece of pork. When you get one threaded on well, it lasts a long time. Seems to take trying 3 or 4 to get one that isn’t too tough to thread on. I’ve gone back to pretty much using all real crawlers. Nothing artificial has been durable enough to make it worth the extra cost over crawlers.

What color beads are best to start with, or do you prefer any color specific color most of the time?
