Hi Guys, Finally able to get back on here after the change. I am looking for recommendations for sleeper shacks. A group of us are looking to do this. We have never done it before and think it would something fun and a change of pace. We fish the river around Lacrosse and want to get away during the ice season to try new water and a change of scenery. Willing to drive wherever. Looking at a Thursday-Sunday deal. I have read stuff about going out during the day and sleep in a hotel at night, but we want to do the sleeper shack thing at least once, just to say we did it. Thanks for any recommendations!

Early season ice on Red Lake or Lake of The Woods are some great choices.

I’d forego LOTW if you’re looking for a night bite in the sleeper shack. The dark stained water precludes almost any action at night.

URL is fun (Westwinds is a nice resort). Lake Winnibigoshish “Winnie” would be a good, less traveled alternative (See last season’s video). If you do Winnie, I’d recommend reaching out to Ryan (http://www.ryansguideservice.com/). He has sleepers and puts you on fish.

How many are in your group? And what do think your budget would be. LOTW and URL have a lot of options. Some offer the basics and some offer more. the LOTW tourism web site has a list of resorts that offer sleepers. I usually book our sleeper date the year prior or months in advance.

For early and Late Ice I say LOTW. URL and Winnie are pretty good the whole season for fish. but that’s just from my experiences.

I have experience two times on Mille Lacs. Once with Appledoorns and Once with Portavilla. Depending on what you want to spend and accomodations there are a lot of options. The last time with Portavilla 4 of us rented an Icehouse with a generator. It was nice to have lights and power to charge phones, and marcums. Portavilla rents on Mille Lacs but also Red Lake. Had good success both times. With any type of fishing it can be hit or miss depending on where they have the houses.

Furley Outdoors is considering renting their 2-3 person sleeper shack on Lake Koshkonong, southeast of Madison, WI this year. Most people target walleye and northern pike with tip-ups on this system. We’re hoping to make a final decision very soon. Good luck out there! – Jim Furley
