Sled Set-Up for Hub Shelter Fishing

Went to a hub style this year as it is easier to fish out of a vehicle with. We still will walk out onto some lakes so I use a small Otter sled and just pile/balance everything on it. The shack is a Fatfish 949i. I have a Lite Flite auger, flasher, chairs, heater, bucket, etc so it over flows the sled.

The question is, has anybody out there made any modification to a sled to better haul a hub style shelter? I am thinking of some sort of frame/rack to essentially mount the longer items over those in the sled, etc. Has anybody done anything like that? The simple answer would be to get a bigger sled, but then I am right back to the same size as my 3 person flipover. Let me know if anyone has any ideas and/or photos of what they have done. I like the smaller sled/hub as it fits nicely in the back of my Expedition without flipping down the second row.

Research smitty sled. You can mount/strap a Jet sled or otter sled to the top. Makes pulling a lot easier. Can construct to fit your needs.

I haven’t made one but I think the answer would be to build a Smitty Sled with a bigger deck on it to hold the hub, then put your sled with other gear next to the hub on the deck. You could hinge the deck or make it 2 pieces so it fit in a vehicle more easily.

I have just used 2 ratchet straps and strapped the hub down on top of the sled running straps criss cross

I have seen some smitty builds that are notched that would just lift apart into pieces. Put eye bolts into the ski sections and ratchet strap the hub/auger/chairs to the cross members and it would be locked in. Easy to pull too.

Or… pull a big a$$ sled like I am building and be right back where you started.

I should have added that after the pics I put eyebolts in the end of the 2x4s so that I could strap the sled on. Also my 2x4s pull out for disassembly. The boards slip into the slots and the bolts just hold them in place. A lot of information on YouTube.

Yeah, I use to put the foot locker into the sled, it makes a nice flat top for stuff to be added on top of.

It’s not much but this is something I put together to haul my Hub style shack out when I use it. The Hub slides in under the auger. The basket I put locator in and the tub out front my bucket and heater fit in. Slides right into the back of my Dodge Nitro with one seat down leaving room for me and two passengers.

That’s more along the lines of what I was thinking! Did you notch out the sled gunwales to fit the pipes in? I see you have them bolted to the sides also.

Actually i drilled holes in gunwales and have PVC running under the lip of gunwales for extra support. Also did not glue any of the fittings together, I used pop rivets that way if changes need to be made I could drill out rivets to separate pipe.

Guys on trick your trap are using coffee table hinges(most use 2 per side) for their smittys.
Also, Kolpin auger mounts are pretty great to have on the back of the sled.

Side note: S2B shack anchors are pretty awesome for anchoring the flip on really windy days.

For hub inspiration, here’s Jake Daniels’ overnight hub setup. Yes, btw he has CO detectors for the sunflower.
