Sled length for Eskimo FatFish hub

    Guys,

In my attempt to lighten the load for long treks, I just purchased an Eskimo FatFish hub (on sale at Fleet Farm this week, btw). Took it out yesterday, and the hub worked great. I used my Otter sport sled, which is a bit over 4 feet long. I made it work (the hub) by strapping it on but it wasn’t super stable. Wondering what length sled/set up you guys with Eskimo FatFish use when pulling it in a sled by hand (ATV etc. not an option for me). One of the areas I got is a mile walk, portions through woods, so just looking at options. Debating whether to try the Otter “large” sport sled.

    Thanks

I use the Jet Sled ATC 1 (same length as the regular Jet Sled 1) which is 54″ long or 4.5′. My hub is 65″ long when packed up so it extends a little but for the most part it stays stable when laid on top of some other gear and/or next to my auger. When the sled is really full I’ll put a bungy cord tightly over everything to keep it down. I imagine that this would work well for the Fatfish hub as well.

I’ve also attached skis to the bottom of the sled using 2x2s and skis from goodwill. Slides nice!

I would suggest making a smitty sled to haul all your gear and make the pull much easier. On mine I have a clam 6 pack a gas auger a 20lb 20lp tank and all my gear. I fill my 4 ft sled with the gear hang the tank off the back of the sled and lay the clam next to it. You can make the smitty as wide as you. Red it to be.

Hear is another pic of it loaded. It pulls like there is only 20lb in it.

My 949i lives the whole season in an Otter medium Pro sled. It never goes back into the bag until spring for storage purposes. My sled does have the hyfax and pulls very easy. Found the sled on CR to save a few bucks.

Smitty sled, great for early ice when walking on and even better when the snow piles up and pulling a regular sled through the snow sucks if not using a snowmobile to pull it.Fish safe

Great tips! Thanks, guys. I may have to research the Smitty sled more. Especially that PVC pipe option; probably even lighter I bet. Thanks again!
