you think mid-August the Kings will be in close again as they start staging?
Lord knows I’d love to get over there. Is Labor Day weekend to late?
Love your posts….and pics…August 12, 2015 at 11:39 am #1559212I got my first King yesterday jigging really early in the morning… and it was so cool. 20 plus minutes later landed it on my own. Just a hair under 15#. It really gave my medium action spinning rod and I a good test, and it is easy to see why guys get hooked on catching them this way. After a solid hook set, and all that fight, the second it was in the net the hook just fell out.
This said, I missed the bite Nathan described. Unlike that timing, I was there by the gaps in Milwaukee on my own. No one else, and it was the only bite I got. Trolled for a couple hours with nothing to show for it… sort of normal for me, but there were only two other boats in site all morning… compared to fleets of them as I understand it a couple weeks earlier.
It was a fantastic experience for sure… while I would have liked to find success on the trolling gear I am slowly building up – nothing will top that sore arm thing with the spinning rod. Never saw line spin off off my reel so quick and frequently.
August 12, 2015 at 12:27 pm #1559226Flatfish- Like Chuck experienced, there will be some kings sniffing around the harbor every day for the rest of the season now. How many will depend largely on water temps and how much bait\ fishing pressure is around. Right now, the big kings know they’re coming home soon. They’ll be putting on the feedbag before they push in, usually as in skinny of water as they can find suitable temps and food. In a few weeks, they will cease to care about food and push in despite temps and conditions. For now though, food and cool water are paramount. Labor day is really pushing it for finding silver fish, but I’m sure you could find some. The ones inside the harbor at that point, shouldn’t be all that dark either… Really depends if your looking more for meat or fight at that point.
August 12, 2015 at 1:46 pm #1559238Chuck, if you jig with a 8′ or longer rod your arm will like you. Huge stress difference between fighting with your arm or the rod. My 12 foot noodles are perfect for letting the rod do the work

Never thought about that… guessing the 6.6 I use is a little short. Odd thing, as soon as I landed it, my arm was all better and looking to do it again.
??? The one I caught, at that weight, about 30″, and not having the back fin clipped (assuming natural fish from what DNR guide indicates) – is that most likely a four year old fish, that would have died this fall?

August 12, 2015 at 9:39 pm #1559289that news is great but is also killing me! my ‘free’ weekend went to hell about yesterday
August 13, 2015 at 8:10 pm #1559429Nathan photo 5-5 is that a sucker? on the right
Looks like a drum to me. Sheepie!
August 13, 2015 at 9:50 pm #1559439I wish I could get down there the reports are great but not helping me. Boat had been buried in the garage since June and going to be at least two more weekends before I “might” catch a break.
Good luck to those of you making it out.
Hey Flatfish, I would make that run with you if are looking for a passenger

August 14, 2015 at 9:43 pm #1559575Dave, ‘IF’ I get a chance to get over there, I’ll give you a shout. It’s a huge maybe for August 22-23….leaning now to Labor Day weekend, but now that Saturday got blow up..which leaves Sun-Mon (+ I asked to be off work Tues _ but that’s not looking good)
I will keep in touch….August 20, 2015 at 9:05 am #1560469Had a great time in Sturgeon Bay fishing the Bank Reef 8/8-8/11.
First fish was 17 lb for a rookie. Overall we were 28 for about 40, missing out on possession limit by 2 fish. The deep stacked riggers were better for the Kings set at 100 in 100-150 fow. Spoons and Flasher fly both took fish.
