Skunked Bullheading

Headed out two days in a row now, this time with the marsh rat to try to find them on my lake and nothing. What could be going on? I saw a few floating but that was it, not even a nibble. Anyone have any ideas or pointers? I was hoping to go angling for some flatheads tonight but am not looking to spend a buck a bullhead for bait.

You in Minnesota? If so check out the surveys for lakes nearby for high populations of bullheads. If you find a lake with water coming in or going out via river or creek, try near the mouth.

Isn’t that how it sometimes goes. When you’re looking for bullheads you can’t find one. When you’re not looking for them you keep catching them.

bullhead hunting for me has been very very hard this yr. ive heard from many other catters its been a tough yr. not sure why considering the cats starting biting early with our warmer spring but the bullies arent following suit.

it is funny that when we were kids we couldnt catch anything but bullheads now we’re tryin are darnest form them and have trouble. im starting to think maybe we’re over thinkin it or just start enlisted the help of local kids. maybe pay them $0.50 a bullie or sumsum

I’ll take a good 6 inch chub over a bully any day!

I plan on heading out tonight to find some bullies. Noticed I only have a few left. Small creeks have worked for me all spring.

Muddy creeks, kind of in pools or what is the technique for that? I am struggling hard, tried again today.

If your having a hard time catching bullheads for bait go around sunset or after dark. I have never had a problem getting bullheads. Bullheads just like there large cousins (channel, flathead) will feed more heavily in low light\dark periods.

Brain, I found a new creek that is loaded with chubs of all sizes. One good throw with a 6′ throw net and You’d likely get 75 to 100 of all sizes. You can have all you want and that’s only one bridge on this creek, two other bridges are the same way just come and get them.

Not sure about muddy creeks, I’ve caught them in relatively clean water. Make sure there is vegetation, especially old raggedy vegetation and algae. Bullheads eat a lot of that crap, besides protein. If the muddy water has a muddy bottom, that should be good.

I’ve been getting quite a few in my traps, clean water pond in a small park – noticed they’ve been out deeper than I’ve got them in the past.

Chubs on the other hand, I’ve struggled to get those all year.

Can we use traps in Minnesota for bullhead? I’ve heard a few people using them but what I see in the regs just say dipnet, angling and minnow seines. Just curious because I’d be interested in making a few if we can.

We went out Saturday morning and were able to get enough bait in a hr for the next few weeks. I have had my best luck around colverts or small dams on creeks.
