I know some guy’s consider trolling for Muskie’s to be a bad idea. I don’t so here goes.

I’m looking for tips and idea’s for trolling on Mille Lacs. The pressure they see can be enormous and i’d like to show them something different. That and at my age throwing baits all day becomes more of a chore then an enjoyable day if you know what I mean.

Also if any of you guy’s troll and are looking for a extra rod in the boat sometime give me a shout, i’m only 45 minutes from the water.

I look forward to hearing your idea’s.

Trolling and pulling boards isn’t much different than what’s going on out there now. A certain postmaster guide made it VERY popular!! I’ve done a fair amount of trolling the N shore last couple years, MANY, MANY others have the same idea. Trolling Malmo to Wealthwood it’s not odd to see 20-30 boats doing the same exact thing, along with a hundred casters. SO MUCH PRESSURE!! Mille is quickly becoming world reknowned as possibly the body of water to produce the next record ski. With this hype it’s gonna see even more pressure in the coming years and even more trollers. Amazing what that guide started.

    Thanks for the reply!

I know what you are saying about the North end, insane up there some times.

I’d like to learn how to troll deep water, looking for suspended fish out by the flats and mud. Kinda of fun to troll around all the bobber guys.

Down rigers soft glass rods, 10 lb + balls min. (faster you go more weight needed) and buck tails (black with silver blade mepps) also large shallow running perch or walleye color stick baits. 5-6 ft up off bottom works great for me. Good luck

If you don’t want to mess around with 10lb balls, I would suggest trying some of the in-line saltwater weights. You may sacrifice some screaming speed, but depending on what kind of baits you are fishing you will have relatively little trouble getting them down. Keep in mind most of the areas out in no man’s land bottom out at 34′-37′, and on top of some of the flats as shallow as 23′. An Ernie at 3.5 mph will easily get down to 20’+ with not a whole lot of line out. I messed around with some 5oz weights last fall putting them in front of a 4′ flouro leader. I had no trouble getting a Siligirl down 20′ feet at 3 mph. We also tried the same thing with Bulldawgs, seemed to perform about the same. Now this was fall, we were fishing mid-lake rock edges, not the flats. My guess is we will be out giving no-mans land a try as early as opening weekend.

Try BassPro for the big lead, they have them up to 8oz,

Thorne Bros. also has some pretty heavy trolling weights.
