Too much time on my hands waiting for safe ice. Had some extra Ram mount parts for a rail mount. Rigged it up on the handle bar of my Skidoo Tundra. Attached a Humminbird Helix 7 GPS wired to the Skidoo’s battery – Lakemaster cards for Wisconsin and Minnesota. Be trying it out shortly. Do not plan on using it as my fish finder, will use my Vexilar in the Otter. If it gets real cold, the bird will be in the nest – don’t know how extreme cold will affect the liquid crystal screen.

That should work great. I run an HDS-5 all winter down to -30. I take it off the sled at night if the sled is sitting outside. More often we out the sleds in an enclosed trailer with a sunflower on low to just keep it warmish.

You’ll love the set up on the Tundra, assuming you’re hooked in to the sled’s battery.

One other thing I do, I do shut the unit off while I’m at a fishing spot for more than an hour or so.

I only plan on using it to locate structure or relocate cribs on our lake. I am not going to use the fish finder capabilities – plan to shut the unit off when we start drilling holes. We also ice fish on Chequamegon bay for trout. Noticed that you are from Rogers….ever get to Cabela’s? I get down there on occasion to drop some money and use up points.

Does your snowmobile have a backup pull start? The Helix will pull alot of juice from the starter battery, hate to get stuck on the lake and be forced to hand start that mofo…

I ask because when I had a sled it was electric start only…

That’s exactly how I use my HDS. The chip is invaluable for locating structure.

I make it to the Rogers Cabela’s far too often, and they have made far too much money off me…ug.

Yes I do have pull start – battery is brand new. I will only be using it to locate structures. As soon as we stop to fish, it goes off and the Vex 28 goes to work. Going to the Duluth Ice show this weekend, and will bug the ‘Bird man.
