I’ve got a WX2100 with a 300 offshore and I need a new starting battery. I would like to use an Interstate Group 29 deep cycle. It’s a little light on the CCA and adequate on the MCA according to the Yamaha manual.

I was wondering if others have had good success with using a deep cycle as a starting battery on the 300 offshore. It seems to take some juice to turn that baby over.

I snapped a quick photo before our rigging tech dropped this battery into a WX 2190 here at Skeeter Boat Center in Ramsey. It has a 1000 cold cranking amps!

That’s what I’m wondering about. Deep cycle only has 675 CCA and the manual is specifying 680.

Do not go low on CCA rating with interstate batteries. There CCA ratings are over rated as is. I work field service for Cummins on standby generators and probably replace 200 interstate batteries a year. Company recommends replacing these batteries every two years for starting reliability. Spend the money and get a better. Stay away from deep cycle for starting battery. Only asking for issues IMHO

I would have to encourage you to stay away from using deep cycle battery for the starting battery. A deep cycle is not ment to take the quick discharge that it takes to start an engine, a deep cycle is ment to be discharged slowly over time. You do have lots of options for a cranking batterie but don’t go light on cranking amps it will cause issues later. We rig most of the boats at SBC with the starting battery Cal has pictured, and we have had good success with them.

I think I will stick with the group 29 starting battery. Thanks for all your input.
