MX1825 Gel Coat Fix

My MX gel coat was starting to crack around where the splash well and transom meet. I guess this is the fix that Skeeter has came up with. I was just wondering if anyone has had this same problem and has already got the Gator Hyde application put on their boat. I guess I am wondering what people’s thoughts are on the solution to this problem? Rumor has it that the new boats are going to come off the factory line with this already installed. I would think they would re-design before they just cover up the cracks?

Do you run big water with your MX? How many season have you had it too?

I typically do not run big waters. I have had it out only a handful of times on rougher water, but I by no means beat it up. I purchased the boat after it was used as a demo model. From what I have been told, this has been a major issue with a lot of the MX series boats. I’m thinking it is just in the design.

My understanding is it is on several Skeeter models not just the MX.I was told it is only cosmetic????

cosmetic or not in my opinion it is a problem that id expect skeeter to fix not cover up.. I have not noticed this on my wx2000t ..If its only cosmetic the torque from the engine wouldn’t make any difference that being said how come this location is the only place affected.

Would be curious to know if this is a weight issue or a shock type issue. My 2012 has no cracking with the F150. Aren’t you running a 200 and a 9.9?

Transom Saver? I currently only use the composite tube offered by Yamaha and keep meaning to buy the real deal.

Were you informed that’s what it would look like? Is that sprayed on or is it a molded piece?

First I’ve heard of this issue.

I am yet to run or see any glass boat that doesnt get any gel coat cracking. Just part of owning a glass boat. They are always going to flex some its just a matter of where and when.

I agree 100%! I’m not worried about the problem, because they did say it was cosmetic. It would be kind of interesting to see if it was just on the boats with the 200. I was just wondering if anyone has had this coating sprayed onto their boat yet, and what their opinion on the fix was? Its hard to see how its going to look in the picture. It is nice to get other peoples feedback. I have to say it has been a really smooth transaction getting it taken care of. No questions asked, they are handling it.

Yes, I’m running a 200 w/kicker. I have had a transome saver since the day I owned it. It is a spray on coating that suppose to have the looks of a truck bedliner, but the material that is being used is for marine applications. Sounds like Skeeter is having Gator Hyde spray their boats for now, and later down the road they might purchase a machine to spray their own.

That doesn’t look like a fix to me. That’s like spraying bedliner over rusted rockers on a truck.

Yes they have. I have been working with SBC and they are always a pleasure to work with. Eric and the guys out there do a great job on keeping me informed and giving me the up to date status. That is one reason why my worries are minimal.

I have a MX 1825 with the same Gel Coat problem. I have a f150 and a 9.9 kicker. I just took mine back in to my dealer for a fix at Anchor Marine in Appleton.

    I agree 100%. I Fished out of a 620 tiller w a 150
Yamaha for 4 yrs tournament fishing and the owner of the boat pointed 5 different places on the interior of the boat where stress cracking had occurred he was also concerned and was told it was only cosmetic.

There are 2 ways to fix gel coat cracks. One is to sand then paint it. That is the easiest. Using bed liner is similar and probably a better choice. The other is to carefully sand the gel coat down to the glass and resin then apply a new gel coat. That is more costly and a longer process. Gel coat doesn’t like to flex much so when it does it ends up cracking. Especially if it’s applied too thick. I wouldn’t worry too much about limited spider webbing. If it occurs in more places around the boat, especially near or below the waterline, then I’d be really worried.

I was able to check out the boat show today, and got a chance to stop by and look at the coating they are spraying in the splash well. I was impressed on how well it looked. Looks great! It looks to be a very durable product and after talking to Dean, I walked away feeling very confident that this product is going to serve many other purposes. The non-slip surface that it will provide while netting fish and it also being the universal spot in the boat to relieve yourself from too much coffee already serves as a good addition to the boat. I was kind of worried when I seen the picture, but I think it looks a lot better in person. Even if there wasn’t cracks present, I would have to look into putting this into my boat. Glad I went to look because I feel much better about it.

After looking at all the new shinny boats, man am I really itching to get back on the water. It cannot come soon enough!
