No hole shot after 20hr service on 300 SHO

After my 20hr service my 2012 WX2100 comes out of the hole like a dog! The motor is a 300 Yamaha 4-stroke. Before the service it came out like a rocket and ran 56-58. Since servicing the boat is a dog out of the hole and runs 52-54 if I am lucky. The dealer told me maybe it was the fuel so he recommended switching from 91 to 89 octane. No difference. He switched out the Saltwater 15×21 prop to another type of Yamaha 14×21 prop and it comes out of the hole like a bullet. Its back to running 55-57. Problem is I don’t think I should have to pay for a new prop to get my performance back that it had before the service. Has anybody run into this performance issue or have any suggestions? I should add it has taken months of being ticked off to get to the point of trying a new prop.

It’s really odd that it was fine with the old prop. That’s a strange one

Welcome to In-depth!! Heck of a first post.

I don’t know how the Yamahas are but on my OptiMax it was absolutely critical the gap on the plugs was perfect. I guess I would look at what all was done on the service. Maybe one of the techs from SBC will chime in and be able to help.

    Once again…..welcome!

Do you know for certain what prop you had to begin with? Seems odd that a new prop would make everything alright.

Yeah kind of a lengthy post but, I literally read every post on the WX2100 here about 10 times before buying one. So I thought this forum was the best place to get Skeeter answers! Blackbay funny you mentioned that because I just had that conversation today with somebody about wondering if my prop got switched out by somebody at the dealership. I am going to go and look thru my paperwork and see if I can find something. Dang thing is I love the new prop just not $800.00 of love. The new prop is 7 lbs lighter than the saltwater series not sure of the name of it though.

Definitely very odd. Nothing about scheduled maintenance should require a new prop. I’d definitely check into your records to see if you can verify if you’re still running the same prop. I wouldn’t think someone at your dealership would swap props on you but that actually makes more sense than suddenly needing a new prop to get your performance back after they changed the oil and plugs.

I’ll be stopping in at Skeeter Boat Center tomorrow in the AM. If one of their mechanics doesn’t respond by tomorrow AM I’ll be sure to point them to your post to get their take on things.

Good Lord, $800 for a prop? That is absolutely insane.

    First welcome to IDO!

Now about your problem, first for the fuel those engines are designed to run on a minimum of 89 octane so 91 should not affect performance, infact I know a lot of people around us run 91 just to avoid ethanol. I can’t speak for the other dealer but at SBC a 20 hr service is changing the fluids oil and gear lube and oil filter. Then hooking it up to the computer to make sure there weren’t any codes and to log the oil change. Then we check the engine running to look for any water leaks or any loose wires ect. Last we check to make sure the engine doesn’t have any updates that need to be done to the engine.

That’s basically what we do and none of those things should negatively affect the performance at all. We have found on many of our boats we don’t get as good of performance out of the saltwater series props but if that’s what you had on, it should still perform the same.

Good luck in solving your problem! If we can be of any help please let us know.

the prop should come off when doing diagnostics etc. for safety reasons?

My guess the wrong prop was accidentally put back on.

Sounds to me like a used car salesman tactic, or a bad garage. Put on a non standard prop, then when you complain sell you your old prop for 150% of what it should be selling for. Or in your case 250% cause you should have never had to buy it in the first place.

I am hoping it was just a mix up on the props. Generally is there a certain prop that has had great performance on the 2100’s?

For sure a weird problem you have had. I tested a lot of props on this set up and the best all around prop is the Turbo 1 21p. If you are willing to lose a little hole shot get a 23p. With the 23p you will run 55-5600rpms(which is where the motor is rated for 300hp) and get 58-61mph.
