Skeeter boat ride

I will be in the market soon for a new boat and have a question. I have been running a ranger 621 and love the boat except for water coming over the front trolling in big waves. Aside from that no boat I have been in even comes close. I have never been in a Skeeter. My question is in the 2100 do you get wet in windy conditions running at an angle to the waves? The ranger blows the water almost straight out flat so the wind doesn’t blow the spray back into the boat getting you wet. That wasn’t the case with my Pro-V’s I’ve had. The skeeter hull looks the spray would be similar to the lund. The Skeeter $$$ savings vs the ranger is very appealing. I wish there was a Skeeter dealer that did test rides on big water like Mille Lacs. Maybe Dean will have a fishing trip to ML next spring on a breezy day and I can go for a ride

The 2100 Skeeter is a great boat and waves wouldn’t crest the bow when trolling in the wind. I got the opportunity to drive the new wx 2190 which is replacing the 2100. It is absolutely an amazing dry ride! Both would be great options for you.

living on mille lacs, and having a 2025 prov i can tell you that it can be very wet in windy conditions. i have been out there in a 20ft skeeter, 20ft ranger, and a 20ft tuffy, and by FAR the best and driest ride is the tuffy. that is of those 3 boats. i have not been in a yarcraft in windy conditions so i can’t give a opinion on that boat. the only problem with tuffy is finding a dealer. good luck with your quest

Get a hold of Chris at Rainydaze. He runs his 2100 from April till Oct. on Rainy. Definitely big water.

I just fished with Paul Delaney out on Lake Michigan the day before hurricane Sandy blew in. Conditions were very, very rough. Paul typically fishes from a 621. At the end of the day, as we were loading the 2190 on the trailer, Paul came up to me and said “tell the guys at Skeeter their boat did a great job out there today.”

My advice, for more extensive feedback from a guy that has fished from both, would be to shoot him a call. Paul’s a great guy and a straight shooter.

As for my opinion on the hull… it is fantastic. I’ve noticed significant improvements over the 2100 for overall ride quality, dryness of ride, room, stability, speed…. basically every last comparison I can think of. And I still don’t get waves over the front of the boat when trolling and lord knows we tried out on Superior a couple times this fall.

Sounds like a boat ride is on the to do list! Happy to make that happen, even this fall. As of now, both the 2100, or 2190 are available.

A Skeeter doesnt have the flare that a Ranger has in the hull so you will find it much like a Lund or any flat sided boat, you will get that slap and spray when you are quartering the waves. They may have changed things a little in the hull since I had my 2050 but they arent that much different. Ranger still has a better fit and finish and just seems to feel like a more solid boat. Rangers run low in the water and you will take water over the bow but they also catch less wind and track better in the water. Skeeter has gotten more popular but I think for the most part a smaller price tag compared to similar boats has helped with that.

With all due respect the hull design on the 2190 doesn’t look like or perform like a Lund and the 2190 has been improved greatly from the 2050 back in the day.

    Two words – test drive.

I’m officially in the market for a big glass walleye boat. I live in Oregon and had a very nice deep welded aluminum boat, but found myself walleye fishing 98% of the time. I put my boat on craigslist and unexpectedly sold my boat this weekend and now I need a new one. I’m leaning towards the Skeeter 2190 primarily due to the open cockpit layout, but am interested in any new opinions. Im also looking at the Ranger 621 and Nitro ZV21. Any good pics of a perfectly setup 2190 would be appreciated.

I have posted a link to one of our hold over 2013 WX 2190 that is deeply discounted, in the meantime I will go out and take some pictures of a fully rigged WX 2190.

Pretty sure that if you get a strong enough cross wind, it will wrap the water around your wind shield in any boat, if you are at the perfect angle. But when the trolling gets hot, ie. windy conditions, what I cant stand for is having both bilges run all day and standing in ankle deep water bc the ranger 620 spears almost every 3 footer when trolling into waves. Which is what happened to us last year in my buddies 620 on the POND. You talk about wet! At least we caught a lot of fish. Only knock I have with ranger walleye boats. Otherwise… nice boat overall.

Where you located and what bodies of water do you fish?

Good luck with that “soon to be yours” new boat and bringing that first fish over the gunnel.

I grew up in the midwest and moved to Oregon 20yrs ago out of college. I have been obsessed with fishing the Columbia for walleye since I learned it was a world class fishery. You should do a show out here sometime!!!

I don’t often shy away from destinations that require long hours in the truck towing the boat but a trip to Oregon might be over my pain threshold. That said, if I’m going to ever do a Columbia River show… I’m going to need to find a friend at the end of the line with a boat we can film from. That would be one heck of a long tow!!

Just out of curiosity, when’s the best time to fish those walleye out there?

James – I pulled the trigger and locked in the deal today on the new WX2190. I fish nearly year round with my favorite time probably being in the late fall, with good numbers of big fish, especially at night. The winter/early pre-spawn is also great if you are willing to bear the elements. I’m far from a professional guide but as soon as I get the new ride, my boat is your boat!!!
