big motor with kicker problem?

I’ve been having problems with my big motor after I run the kicker. This is on 2008 WX1880. I had the kicker put on last fall and the fuel line is connected to that factory pre-installed fitting in the back. My big motor normally starts instantly at the first crank. But after I run the kicker it has really hard time starting. It’s like the kicker sucks the fuel out of it? Is that possible? Did anyone experienced anything similar? Thanks.

I’m still trying to figure this out. Maybe someone here knows how the fuel lines are connected in 2008 wx1880. It looks like the kicker line goes direct to one of the tanks. Is it the front or back fuel tank? The main motor is connected to both tanks with a switch to choose front, rear or dual fuel tanks. Is it possible for the kicker to create negative pressure in one or both of the tanks and suck the fuel out of the main motor? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You are correct on the fuel line routing. The main motor line go to both tanks with a switch in it. The kicker motor has a seperate line running to the REAR tank ONLY.

Does this happen mostly when its warm out? My best guess would be that the big motor is vapor locking. It would be very hard and a lot of things would have to happen perfectly in order for the main motor fuel to drain back.

Next time it happens see if when you pump the primer buld a couple of time if it starts right away.

Thanks Eric. Yes, it has happened the last 3 times I was out and it was hot… Low 80’s in March! I did use the primer bulb, but even after that it took a while to start, and sounded terrible when it did. I never heard of vapor locking. Is there anything else I can do?

There isnt really an easy solution to Vapor locking. About the only thing you can do is get the primer bulb good and hard then start it. It will hiccup a little until it gets a good flow of fuel going back to it.

More than likely you still have or had a good amount of fuel in it from last fall or this winter. The winter blend of fuel now days does not react well to high temps. That is probably the biggest issue.

Thanks Eric. Yes, I’m still burning last fall’s fuel mixed with the new. Will try to get it closer to empty before I refill.
