My trailer has the 5-pole flat plug but my new truck came with 4-pole flat plug. Is there an adaptor I can use or do I have to re-wire the plug on the truck? I know the 5th pole is for the brakes but I’m not sure how they work. Any help would be appreciated.

If your trailer is equipped with surge brakes the fifth wire will be needed and should be blue on the trailer. You will need that wire connected to the truck also because that is the wire that will over-ride the brakes when trying to back up. Without that wire connected most all times when you try to back up your brakes will engage and not let you back up.

In order to hook up the fifth wire you will need to get a 5 wire plug for your truck. When you go to hook it up there hopefully will be a blue wire on the truck end still. That is the wire for the fifth post. If not, you will have to search for the wire that has power to it when your reverse lights are on, and hook that into the blue wire on the harness.

If you cant find the blue wire on the truck you may have to trace the wires back to the 4 way split in the truck and go from there.

Any questions just hollar! Good luck!

Thanks guys! I took the easy way out. I stopped at a trailer repair shop today and they had the 5 pole plugs in stock. It cost me $49 and it took them 15 minutes to install. (it would take at least 3 hours if I did it
