Upon arriving to Sha-Sha resorts dock picking up yesterdays customers I notice an eager looking 10 year old boy awaiting my arrival. Davis the grandson of customers Dennis and Cindy Middelton was first to greet me as I secured “Sho-Time” dockside. The first words to come out of this 10 year olds mouth were “Your boat is COOL!!”. It was apparent to me this fishing trip would be as much about heating up the cool waters of Rainy Lake with our “COOL” WX2100 from Skeeter Boats as catching fish.

Davis plain and simple had the attention span of a typical 10 year old boy. Catch fish or do something else quickly please. Fortunately for us 30 seconds into the trip our eager 10 year old along with Grandma Cindy were doubled up on beautiful Rainy lake slot fish.

As a reminder for parents or Grandparents in this case that want their young ones to experience fishing; When we take young kids fishing we expect further activity!! This may mean burning through the back channels while delivering the infamous “Hang on to your hat Davis….This boat can nearly lift off the water!!”. The trip is about fun first and fishing second. As kids grow older they should be allowed to dictate further time spent chasing fish. Plan on exploring islands, eating at a Voyageur National park campsites, Ripping through the back granite cuts, and even letting that 10 year old boy sit in the Captains Chair of pretty darn “Cool” Boat!

Upon arriving back at Sha-Sha Resort Davis was simply all smiles. As a fishing guide it made me feel pretty good. There were 2 boys casting off one of the docks as we idled our big 300hp Yamaha “Off Shore” dockside. One of the two boys hollered at us “Catch Any??”. Davis was the first to yell back “WE CAUGHT LOTS OF WALLEYES!!!!”. I would place money on Davis explaining how he drove that cool boat to those 2 boys. The smile on a 10 year old boys face while nearly losing his hat was priceless as the unmatched force of “Sho-Time” delivered the “FUN” to yesterdays fishing adventure.

On a sidenote; Fun qoutes of the day from Cindy as she eagerly eyed her fishing rod. “I Can’t believe I’ve waited this long to enjoy FISHING!!” “This is SO MUCH FUN”. I reply….Cindy…….Fishing IS fun, but catching is where it is at!!

Qoutes from Dennis “I’ve never caught this many BIG FISH” “This day couldn’t be more PERFECT!!”

Big thank you to both Dennis and Cindy for bringing fishing to the “World of Davis”. Beyond that I think both Grandma and Grandpa can be pretty proud of those Rainy Lake tankers that were a mere sideline to our trip!!

You would’nt had to write anything at all. The look on that boys face says it all. 1850 headed that way soon

There are few things as rewarding as youngsters catching that fever that has had guys like us literally “Down with the Sickness” for so many years. If I’ve learned one thing over my years of taking kids fishing it is each boy or girl has a different level of patience for fishing. Start slowly and work your way up. Kids in the “Sho Time” get there fish and also the captains fish to reel in. This give some added action sometimes. The main importance always must revolve around fishing being very closely related to lots of FUN!! If that means burning down the water or taking an afternoon dip off the shorelines it really doesn’t matter. We fish for FUN and frankly if you remove the “FUN” I’d rather not be a part of it either.

Thanks so much for the kind words!! IMHO Passion continues to be the greatest asset any person or business for that matter can hope for. For many years starting with previous business ventures I’ve felt passion was one of the most important qualities in the make-up of an individual. Everything else in life can be learned. Still The ability for one to apply his/her internal passions for life into a chosen career is very rewarding. It was something I admired about many of my hero’s in life. Many of you know I’ve only been guiding now for approximately 6 years, but I assure you these 6 years have been nothing short of amazing!! If there is one thing I hope to accomplish in my life it it to make some sort of difference even if in a small way within the fishing industry. Taking Davis or kids like him into my world of passion for the outdoors is doing it one trip at a time. In this day and age of busy schedules, texting, twitter, and the increasingly complex nature of day to day life I’ve chosen a path less traveled. I assure you this move raised an eyebrow or two from personal family and friends. “Your going to be a Fishing guide huh” Personal wealth is measured one smiling boy or girl at a time in the guide biz!! Don’t get in to get rich, but enter the industry to live a rich life. Frankly…….I kind of like it that way, and in my own mind am the richest man in the world!!

A devious guide might mail Davis a picture of the new 2012 Skeeter when it comes in.

Well done, something he will remember a long time.

LOL!! Funny! He was certainly curious with “Sho-Time”. I would think with today’s loose credit market a simple night crawler stand with good intentions oughta get him a loan for at least a WX1850 of his own!! He can move up to the Wave Smashing performance of the WX2100 when he’s ready. After all……..He is just 10!!

Still my guess is after his book signing campaign at Sha-Sha resort sharing big walleye secrets we’ll likely have to earn his business back!!
