I’m hoping to add a kicker to my boat soon. It will be a 4 stroke Yamaha to match my main motor. Now, I’m trying to decide between the 8 hp or 9.9 hp. The 8 hp doesn’t come with the electric start and power trim. I think I would prefere these options. But the 9.9 is a lot more money and also very hard to find right now, some stores telling me 5-6 months lead time… So please let me know what you would do: get the 8hp, or wait few months and get the 9.9?
Also, another question: do I need to put a plate on the transom or does the kicker go on the way it is? Thanks.

Definitely wait, or keep looking. I saw a T8 with trim / electric start (never used) recently at dealer near me. Not sure if it’s still around. Tilt and electric start are worth every penny extra, and worth the wait, IMO.

    No plate needed. good luck….

Thanks Mike. That’s what I was thinking also. I guess will have to do without the kicker for the rest of this year. Glad to hear I don’t need the mounting plate.

There are still a couple new T-8’s out there with the electric start and trim and tilt. Just a little harder to find.

The T-9.9’s are the newer versions of the T-8’s. Im not sure what other dealers have in stock but I do believe we have a couple of them left right now.

You will not need to any type of plate to mount it also like Mike said. It will mount right to the transom with no problem!

Do I dare ask what the price range of these motors are? I may be in the market for one as well.

new ones are roughly 2900. IF and I mean IF you find a used one be ready to still pay around 2k for one. They hold there value really well and rarely get sold.

I may add, that price is based on a new, t-9.9 with electric start and tilt and trim.
