WX1900 vs. WX1990

Almost seems like heresy to post and not mention the MX1825, so consider this a shoutout to the MX. LOL

But, as you can probably tell by the title of the post I am really interested in the two WX models. I have been focusing on the WX1900 but lately I have been wondering about the 1990. I have a family of five and the extra space would be welcome but I do have some questions.

First and foremost is the engine. On the 1900 I had settled on the 200HPDI but ultimately I think I would prefer a four stroke. I was told that for the 1900 the 200HPDI was the best motor option and in the end I am sure I would be fine with it. The bit research I have done on the 200HPDI has all been very favorable and it seems like a great engine.

Stepping up to the WX1990 I would be able to get a four stroke in the 225. I know very little about this motor and frankly it is hard to keep track of all the engines in the Yamaha line. I have seen a lot of talk about the SHO engines, although I don’t believe the 225 is a SHO. And if that is the case, are there plans for a 225 SHO? Is it worth waiting for? Is the current F225XCA a good engine? Hole shot? Top end? From the perf sheet on Skeeters site it looks like the 1990/225 would have similar hole shot to the 1900/200 with a little less top end.

Next, the two hulls. Besides the difference in length/width are the hulls similar? The boat layout? Storage? Are there any changes/updates for the 2012 models? It seems like there would be a lot more room in the 1990, at least on paper, is that the case in real world use? (I have not seen a 1990 in person yet).

Lastly, what kind of price difference is there between the two boats? It seems the 1850/1900 are very popular but I hear very little mention of the 1990. It seems that most just jump right to the WX2100, which I would love to do but I have a feeling that would incur a huge price increase. -)

So, is there any love for the 1990?

I will try and answer some of your questions with the knowledge I have.

As far as the motors are concerned, the 200hpdi is and has been a very relieable motor. It is also the best matched motor for the 1900.

The 1990 is able to take a 225. Yamaha does offer the 225 “offshore” which is the “sho” motor but in a long shaft. That motor on the 1990 does very well.

The hull between the 2 boats is the same other than the length and width. In front of the consules is the exact same between the 2 boats. In the 1990 there is an extra 14 inches added in the cockpit, but the storage areas are all the same.

As far as prices I cannot be sure on exact prices as they have just changed for this year. I do know that there is a large differnce between the 1900 price and the 1990 price. Where as there wasnt nearly as large of a jump from the 1990 to the 2100 so must guys just jumped to the 2100.

I will second what Eric has said. My WX 1900 performs great with the 200 hpdi. The cockpit on the 1990 is out of proportion compared to the 2100. Most of the room is taken out of the cockpit of a 2100 for the 1990. This leaves the 1990 with a good sized deck and smaller cockpit. Depending on where you do most of your fishing I would consider the 1900 or the 2100. For big water you can’t beat the 2100 and the cost difference is worth it compared to the 1990. The 1900 is a very balanced rig with the 200 hpdi. Hole shot is amazing compared to a 4 stoke. At mid range economy is very good for fuel.

Nice rundown of 1900 vs 1990. Can you do the same type of comparison for 1850 vs 1900? They seem to be very similar dimensions.

    Wade,
Thanks for the link. I thought there was a thread comparing the 2, just couldn’t find it.
