Skeeter Warranty Bites

Just purchased a 2008 Skeeter 1880, and found out after the fact that Skeeter does not transfer warranty. This boat was used 5 times and the motor was just broke in at less than 50 hours.

Now granted I did great a great deal and it was very clean with no scratches and looked like it just came off the showroom floor, but so far I have had some common debug problems and they are starting to add up. Loose live well hoses fittings, cracked bait well hose, lid lock that was not put on right at the factory, and a screw driven so close to the gas line I had to fix that right away. Small things, but they do add up?

Is this what I am to expect? How long does this debug go on? The original owner purchased the boat in the fall of 2008 and it was not beat up or used in tournaments.

A little dissapointed, but other than that this boat rocks

My only issue(s) so far with my three Skeeters have had to do with fuel filters (obstructions to flow & mounting position) but have been easy fixes for the guys at SBC. Other than that I haven’t had any “buggy” issues to deal with…. knock on wood.

unless you are the original owner, for ANYTHING, warranties usually leave much to be desired.

Does Skeeter’s warranty suck for a 2nd party buyer? more than likely, but so does every other manufacturer out there.

hopefully you will be able to get everything cleaned up for only a few bucks, and have it back to showroom shape, or even better.

Well tightening up a livewell hose or taking a few preventative measures by removing a screw that was close to a gas line isn’t too bad. clamped well lines probably are something all boat owner should check on occassion to ensure they remain tight over the years. Haven’t had any of these issues other than my auto bilge stuck on with something stuck under the float. Got that cleared!! I think that probably might be common until you flush out the boat a few times after the rigging process.

    Enjoy your boat!!

Ranger boats warranty transfers to the second owner for 10 years from manufacture date, 3 years on components like pumps, hoses, etc.

For what its worth, it looks like the warranty in some part of portion is transferable. You might want to go back to the dealer or seller and get this worked out. Who knows what might happen down the road, right?

    “PERIOD OF WARRANTY.

Any new Skeeter boat purchased for non-commercial use from any authorized Skeeter boat dealer in the continental United States by the original retail purchaser, will be warranted against major structural defects in material or workmanship and also have a component warranty.

Structural Warranty. For the duration of ownership of the first retail purchaser, the Skeeter boat will be warranted against any major structural defects in material or workmanship for the hull, stringers and transom. This structural warranty may be transferred during the 10 year warranty period to a second retail purchaser, according to the terms below. Structural Warranty to the second retail purchaser will expire 10 years from the first retail purchase date.”

That sounds very similar to Rangers warranty. I would make some calls, seems to me you should be covered, I was as a second owner of a ranger: I did pay a $100.00 warranty transfer fee when I bought the boat and everything was covered. Good Luck.

I’ve never bought a Ranger or Skeeter used so I can’t comment with firsthand info on what is or isn’t covered but even if it is “hull / structural only” I know I’d still want it transferred. Even more so if it only costs a hundo or two.

The Skeeter warranty has to be transferred within a short time frame and I believe the fee is $250. Do the transfer now if you can as there will be absolutely NO warranty without it. I am having issues with the fiberglass on mine and the dealer “forgot” to mention the transfer fee to change the warranty over to me and now that I am past the short transfer window I am S.O.L.

Skeeters warrenty does transfer. There is a few which I cannot remember off the top of my head though. Like metioned before it is a total of 10 years once it goes to the second owner. I would check with your dealer and the guy you bought it from to get it transfered asap. I would usually transfer the boat warrenty and the motor warrenties right after the title is signed.

If you play your cards right, it sounds like you will be covered with a transferrable warranty, so as far as any big item is concerned, you will likely be covered.

Having said that, you DID buy a 3 year old boat with 50 hours or so on it. I’ve owned 3 brand new boats myself, all of which needed some TLC at one point or another. Some of my minor “issues” may have even been something that could have been done better at the factory, but I would rather fix them myself, than: Hook up my boat and pull it to dealer, wait for dealer to get at it and fix it, then have to go to dealer and pull my boat back – all the while I am boat-less.

I can’t say I’ve had any of your specific issues, but if I did, none would be worth it to me to go to the dealer to get them fixed.

I’m not bustin your chops, but I really don’t think that the things you’ve mentioned are BIG deals that reflect poorly on Skeeter (or their warranty). I think they are issues that, in general, are common throughout the boating industry when folks buy boats that are used, even boats that have as little as 50 hours on them.

I hope your boat is done nickel and diming you so you can enjoy the rest of your summer fishing in that peach of a boat you now own! Tight lines.

Thanks for all the advise guys. I’ll give skeeter a call. I purchased this boat from a private party who had it at dealer.

I’ll check in on that warranty with Skeeter direct. Is there a phone number to call by the way?

Don’t call them. Just send a check like Gregg said. Make them send the check back if there is a problem.

You have nothing to gain with a phone call.
