Sinker Weight Accuracy

I was getting my gear together for a fishing trip and instead of squinting to read the stamps on my weights I pulled out my scale that is accurate to 1 gram (.035 ounces) to separate the weights easier. After weighing and separating a few, I turned up the lights and noticed they were all over the place as far as accuracy meaning the stamp didn’t match the read out. The weights furthest off were my 1 ounce weights that were weighing in around .5 ounces. These particular weights are Bank Sinkers that I’ve had for a long time and don’t even recall where I picked them up(probably at a garage sale).

Is this typical? Do these weights run true or are they all off to a degree?

OK I guess I will bite. First post and its on sinker weight, not sure it really matters I look at the size and determine if its the size I want. If it not working I go smaller of bigger. Amazing what extra time will make us do.

I cast some of my own yesterday. I too questioned their weight. The “herters” mold i used had factory numbers in the molds. They were not even close to being accurate. The “5” sinker weights 3.75oz, the “4” sinker weights 3oz….
My dad always said Herters stuff was junk, looks like he was right.

Type of lead and lead purity matters also!

It would matter if you were using snap weights. He just made an observation. Relax.

It may not matter to you, but when I’m trying to dial in a depth while I’m trolling a snap weight that is off by 50% makes a big enough difference that I care about.

Ok a snap weight that is off 50% could mean a +- of about 4′ depending on your speed. If you are fishing rough water which changes your speed that bait will move way more then 4′. Not really seeing the problem? Most people who fish snap weights are fishing suspended fish if you were bottom fishing notice the bait hit crank it up a few cranks. Not saying what you found isn’t correct but anyone who run’s snap weights and has done it so many times they don’t even worry about the stamp on the weight its just instinct.

I agree this can be frustrating. Especially if you get a tip for someone and they say they are using a 1 oz weight. Well is that a true 1 oz weight? I have found that when I have weighed them that most are under. I can’t tell you why but they do weigh the same even though the label is wrong.
