Since this is the shooters test bench, whats your opinion? 22LR testing

What do you think would be a practical size of a group when shooting 1000 yards?

The long winter sitting around got me thinking about doing a little group shooting when spring rolls around maybe April or May. I had some fun last November shooting some impressive 9” groups at 700 and thought it would be fun to go farther trying to test for repeatability or just to see where the limits end.

I’m definitely looking forward to getting out. I got a chance to work on the 6.5 creed some but thats about it.

Boy, 1000 yards with a 22lr? That seems like a task, you are gonna have to have a scope with a lot of internal adjustment. 2981 inches of drop at 1000 yards. I don’t know what the wind would do either so go on a calm day. coffee waytogo

I guessing I will end up with about 120 Mils of vertical.
I will attempt this on a calm day – afternoon to get some good data for the program after that then its take some wind and see if the aerodynamics in the program is still tracking as we have seen so far. The wind corrections have been good.

    9” groups at 700? .22 LR?

I’d be amazed if the distance was half or a quarter of that with the same grouping. Either you’re an elite military sniper or a professional troller…

Wait, let me tell you about my 6” groupings at 120yds with my compound bow.

    Do you work for MI6?

Looking forward to seeing your results. A 24″ group at 1000 yards with a .22 would be impressive to me. anything less than dead calm wind would make it nearly impossible I believe.

I’ve had 10 shots at about an inch at 100yds and thought that was good. What kind of rifle, optics and ammo are you using? Long range rimfire has been something I always thought was fun since I’m limited in distance for centerfire.

    The rifle used
Vudoo 360 right bolt left port action.
40 moa rail and a 20 moa Spuhr scope mount.
25.5” x 1.25” straight shank 13 twist barrel with EC tuner.
Vortex Gen III 6-36×56 Mil scope with base setup allows 31.5 mils of dial up and another 30 mils of holdover – good for 700 yards.
Matrix Pro II chassis with picatinny bridge ahead of scope.
Multi purpose Charlie MK8 used after 700 yards or when needed in regards to setup.

Using 22LR Lapua Midas Plus ammo

That sounds like it should work. You gonna use standard velocity ammo to avoid bullet tumbling when going subsonic?

That is correct they leave the barrel at 1082 +/- eliminating any transonic disturbance.

My goal is to group within 24” time will tell.

I think that rifle will do the trick lol. I figured it had to be a custom action like a vudoo. I have never used any lapua variety yet but would like to try some. I have a few kidd builds that I use for 50yds that like SK or Eley.

That’s 248+ feet or 82+ yards of drop. That’s mind boggling.

Thats a valid statement, some folks get all crazy when they hear that you’re sending something that has a 100 or a couple hundred feet of drop in which usually theres some good distance involved. They think you’re aiming straight up in an exaggerated vision in their mind, when really you look at the distance and you place a typical farm silo thats 80 or 100 feet tall at the halfway point of your distance and the silo doesn’t look as tall anymore – that distance where the silo sits is the apex of the bullet and from there is the drop. To a certain point the drop doesn’t seem as drastic anymore but it still is impressive to have that and get repeated impacts. More impressive is windage – nothing like throwing a curve ball into the wind and it just keeps returning to the aiming point. Kinda like bowling and baseball, impressive and crazy.

Thanks for all the opinions and questions, as the weather is warming up lately it drives the urge to want to start testing again with the purpose built rifle. I am looking forward to when it is possible.

I always said this from day one with the big rifles that what drives us the most is all the science behind the scenes and the friends evolved that makes it possible. Or at least the urge to prove what some say can’t be done.

Yes back in the day I was trained by some of the best and today I enjoy giving back and training the folks who in turn are responsible for saving lives in the best of their ability.

    Cheers

I’m west of Wausau about 45 minutes just north west of Marshfield. I’m thinking he was probably shooting at a range by Mosinee, WI just outside of Wausau.

Plinking and testing is done in my back yard or I get permission to shoot a 1000 yard private range 15 minutes from home.

Any new reports Jeff? Curious to hear how testing is going. I was out Sunday and got to shoot 200yds for the first time with my 22lr. Once I got the elevation figured out it was mostly wind calls then. Had to come up 52.5” with a 50yd zero.

Waiting for the mud to dry up some so we don’t wreck the fields, it might end up being May who knows but I will be out this spring sometime soon.

My earlier reply was ignorant and snarky. My apologies.

Also curious and looking forward to the results!
