Simple upgrade to go from a Terrova to an Ulterra?

I’m thinking of changing from a Terrova to an Ulterra motor, can I still utilize the quick mount that came on my Skeeter MX1825? So is it simply swapping the motors off the quick mount plate? No other changes or mounting holes needed?

Mounting holes are all still the same!!!

When stowed, the Ulterra shaft sits higher than the Terrova and the base is also shaped a bit different. Switching may impact the fit of your cover, and in particular, the use of a trolling motor stabilizer.

I made the switch on my WX1910:
    – cover was still okay – though harder to stretch it to the hooks on the back
    – RAM stabilizer will still reach but requires bending the shaft down

I don’t like bending the shaft like that so I’m going to try and figure out a different location for the RAM base this winter.

i was already using the longest arm. i could add a claw to the bottom end to increase the total distance, but a claw on each end is starting to get pretty convoluted vs. just adding another ball in a new location. we’ll see, i’ve got a long winter to figure something out! ;-)

mostly just wanted folks to realize it’s not a straight/equal swap between the Terrova and Ulterra, even though the mounting holes are in the same spots.

Doesn’t a stabilizer defeat the purpose of an Ulterra ?
If you have to attach/unattach the stabilizer you might as well just deploy a Terrova.

Take a look at what Cisco offers for a troll motor stablizer. It is adjustable for height and takes just a simple twist and you are ready for deployment. You are really going to like the Ulterra. No more going up front in 3′ waves to pull in the Terrova.

You don’t need a stabilizer, at least thats what I was told. I can see using one when towing but running on the water it’s not needed. I ran mine all summer with no problems.

i don’t attach the stabilizer most of the time, but i do like to have it available as an option. i love not having to manually launch and stow that trolling motor 20 times a day!
i use it on the trailer – it prevents the cover from pushing the head down and bending the shaft when tightened. it’d probably be okay, but i don’t like it to do that. i also attach it when i’m going to run real rough water so that the trolling motor head doesn’t bang into the front gunnel rail when bouncing waves.
i figure $50 in prevention is better than $200 in repair bills if the head were to get damaged.

What happens if you don’t use a stabilizer? I have always just used the locking collar to prevent it from deploying.

It’s not to prevent it from deploying so much as protecting the head from bouncing on the road or in rough seas and becoming damaged.

Actually for most people it was to keep the Terrova from self deploying on rough water. Happened to me and my brothers Terrova running some rough water so now I just use a Velcro strap to the front deck over the shaft when it gets rough out.

Depends on where you fish, as to the need for a stabalizer. I fish the great lakes and wouldn’t dream of not having a stabalizer. That head will bounce big time with out a stabalizer. As far as defeating the purpose, the Cisco stablizer is slick, once it is set up, all it takes is a simple twist to unlock the stablizer and the motor is unlocked and ready for deployment. It is up to you, but if you fish any kind of big water, get the stabalizer and be safe.

There is no locking collar on an Ulterra and no need for one. If you want to “Brace” the head a bit for the ride then use the aftermarket holders. I don’t use them but have gave them a thought if they would be non intrusive and quick and simple to deal with.
