Headed to visit a family member in Alaska who is a teacher for one of the villages. She said bring some fishing gear. I have never fished for salmon on a river. Walleye,Northern,Bass and just about every other fish I have done and have gear for, but not salmon.

What does a guy bring? 7′ med hvy fast ?

    Pink jigs and spoons ?

Just returned from a 3 week trip up there. I brought a 4 piece 7 ft cabellas spinning pac rod in medium action. Used my normal walleye phlueger president reel but went with 15 lb braid and then a 15 lb leader 2 ft long. Had my best luck using silver and orange bluefox pixie spoons or silver blade and white tail mepps spinners. Fish 2 hrs before and after high tides, it’s seemed like the morning tide is better. I was able to land many silver, pink and a 25lb king salmon with this outfit. All casting from shore. Allot of guys use heavier stuff but I think it’s overkill. Most of the rivers I fished were so small you could cast across them. I’d recommend carrying bear spray, I got pushed off a good spot twice by bears. Have fun!

Medium Spinning 15-18 lb test if you are fishing in normal Alaska Rivers, MH baitcast with 30-50 if you are fishing the Kenai. Spinners worked way better than spoons for us. Kenai is a special slip-sinker rig with a yarn streamer fly

don’t forget pink and florescent green yarn lived there for almost 4 years and was a go to most of the time if your fishing current. I was in anchorage and fished all surrounding areas seams silver run would be about over and kings, with a good red run now
