Signs of spring above water relating to what's happening below…

Bust out your phenological journals everyone…

I’m looking for sayings, “ol wives tales”, correlations, timing, etc between certain plants/animals/birds etc above the water and what’s going on below on everyone’s local bodies of water.

    Like…
-specific birds migration arrival that correlates with a certain seasonal fish bite…
-plants/trees blooming or changing around lakes/rivers and whats happening with water temp or fish activity.

I’ve just always been curious of relationships in nature and thought about it today while doing some river fishing for walleyes. I saw a “stand”(Large group) of tree swallows for the first time this year and noticed how the river temp just had hit the low 40s, typically meaning walleyes are moving/ready for spawn to happen soon.

So if that makes sense, please add your own sayings/observations to the conversation.

Personal Favorite: “Spring Bluegills start biting hard in the shallows when the cottonwood tree’s buds are as big as a squirrels ear” -Quote from Local River Rat

Looking forward to some brilliant insights!

The old timers on the Rock River here have always said when the lilacs bloom the whitebass are running.

My grandma always used to say the whitebass would be running when the lilac leaves were the size of a squirrels ear.

Maybe, Smallies are biting when the soft maples have seed hanging from their limbs and lilacs are blooming, that’s whats happening here in Iowa, been hearing the bites pretty good from a couple different guys.
