does anyone have an ideas as to a different sight for a CVA muzzleloader? I cant scope it as I hunt in Minnesota and im having all sorts of trouble with the original sight. it comes loose and falls off, plus the mounting screw strip out…… I have looked all over the web and haven’t really found a good alternative.

sight options for a CVA muzzleloader?

If the holes are stripped you’ll probably have to have a gunsmith drill new holes just ahead or behind the existing ones. Use new screws and add a tiny bit of locktite to the threads when you put the sight back on. CVA open sights are fine for hunting, but if you have a gunsmith drill and tap your gun for a peep site and appropriate front sight you’ll really improve your accuracy.
If you are using this gun during the regular deer season, not the muzzleloader season, you can scope it and hunt it.
September 21, 2016 at 5:21 pm #1640913I was just sighting in my Cva wolf this past weekend and was thinking the sights need to go. Even with my front sight tight it would still move around.

A good peep sight screws on a whole lot more solid and will offer a much better sighting picture than even an open style of sight that comes on these guns.
With my eyesight I have to scope my long guns and even my in-line pistol and all of the brush catchers get removed and blind screws get put in the holes. If you’re going to hunt the regular season I say scope it and be happy. Peep sight otherwise.
September 21, 2016 at 8:46 pm #1640942Are you sure you can’t use a 1 power scope, in Wi You could until they allowed magnified scopes, I have 1x muzzleloader scope that I used 1 year if it’s legal in mn
Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559September 21, 2016 at 8:50 pm #1640943I don’t hunt the muzzy season here in MN, but I do know that have a whole hatbox full of “can’ts and don’ts”. Any scope is one of them during the muzzy specific season if I am not mistaken….iron only. I may be in err on this since it doesn’t get my attention much.
September 21, 2016 at 8:57 pm #1640944I slug hunt during the regular season and muzzy later in the year if need be. The head of the small clamp screws are what strip out on the stock rear sight. I even got a new sight last year from CVA and the head stripped out just loosening it up to put it on the gun…… never actually got it mounted. So I think I will call them again and get another! I’m glad they have a lifetime warranty!!!
September 23, 2016 at 7:35 am #1641182does anyone know if a guy can use a red dot sight on a muzzleloader or is that considered a scope?
Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559September 23, 2016 at 8:23 am #1641193I don’t have a current synopsis for Minnesota handy but a red dot uses a battery and I think that negates its use during the primitive, muzzy season.
I’m not even certain that the pellets/209 primers can be used during the muzzy season….maybe loose powder only.
The dnr could certainly simplify this by allowing only open sighted side lock weapons using the traditional cap and loose powder be used during the late season. Personally my feelings are that the late season was created to allow persons who want to take game using “primitive” firearms, those loaded conventionally with measured powder and discharged using a cap or flint and having traditional open sights, a venue to do so without having to compete with hunters using more advanced arms. Issues surrounding sights can be hard to figure out but if its your gun causing the issue, take it to a qualified gunsmith and allow him to fix it so its done right and while you are there ask about what is legal for Minnesota muzzy hunting in the late season. If he does not know, call the information hot line to the dnr’s Twin Cities office.
September 23, 2016 at 11:50 am #1641251just checked… no red dot sights….. peep with fiberoptics are it in Minnesota…. man I wish the cva sight was nicer cause I cant find anything aftermarket
September 23, 2016 at 12:05 pm #1641256You’re so old Tom it’s entertaining.
We should ban anything but row boats too.
Lol.
I like a peep site on my muzzy for increased accuracy over the stock sites.
I scope it during shotgun season.I also prefer new age sofisticated projectiles like Barnes sabot copper because they penetrate and hold mass. But, I suppose a 30 yd shot with a round ball would work too… But isn’t it fun to have a 300 yd muzzleloader! Probably not in toms eyes. But then again, I only have that accuracy when a scope is allowed during the ‘non traditional season aka slug’.
5 gallon buckets, twigs, and Dacron. Let’s go fishing!
LolOctober 26, 2016 at 8:04 am #1647149Rear peep sight is the way to go IMO
i have an Optima with a Williams peep on it and can keep 3″ groups at 100yrds with fast target acquisition.
however, using the factory front sights it sit kinda tall and i had to adjust the rear peep all the way forward. not to big of a deal cz i wont shoot further then a hundo anyhow.October 27, 2016 at 7:56 am #1647381thanks for the info mr special! I will look into Williams sights because I cant seem to get one from CVA that’s worth a poop…. they fall off, the dove tails are so sloppy that when you snug up the lock screw it pulls out or the screws strip out right away etc……..
October 31, 2016 at 12:15 pm #1648062i use the Williamsrear peeps that made for CVA’s but the factory front still.
i beleive this is the one i have. too bad that dont have pix
i picked mine up at Cabelas
November 1, 2016 at 9:19 am #1648243thanks man!! I will look into it
You’re Welcome but i cant take all the credit, FBRM is whom recommended it to me. when i bought it a few yrs ago they didnt offer a different front sight but now i see you can buy the front sight separately or it comes in a complete kit both front and rear.
too late now for me to change but i think i may look into the front sight next season.its on target now so maybe i shouldnt mess with a good thing.
however, it would give me another reason to shoot it more lol
they mustve taken note from theirs customers. i commend companies that believe in VOC “Voice of Customers”November 1, 2016 at 10:53 am #1648267interesting….. I agree, the customer feed back very important to me as well. we the consumer use the product everyday and put it through the paces
