All good advice above. My tip is as follows: I haven’t opened the paper manual in probably four years. I Google every question i have while i am on the water. Since i use lowrance i would search on these words – lowrance clear side imaging – or lowrance side imaging settings – or Lowrance how to side imaging youtube.
It is amazing what is out there and for me it is much quicker and better information than the manual.

I don’t want to further complicate this but I had some similar problems with my HB Helix 10 G2. Check the angle of your transducer. Also I get better images by using the lower frequencies when searching for fish and only use MEGA once I locate fish.
