Shoulder Surgery/Electric Razor Needed?

After a 2 1/2 year wait my shoulder surgery is happening in 2 weeks. It’s my right shoulder and I’m right handed. I’ve been practicing being left handed and muddling through most things (although I am washing my hands more with one chore). Using a regular razor is just not improving so an electric is going to be needed I think. I need one that will be only needed for just a couple months so I would like to find one fairly cheap. Any suggestions? On a separate note, is it tough to lay in a bed? Why do many use recliners? I have two recliners but the electric controls are on the right side and unreachable.

Had a torn labrum about 4 years ago. Sleeping in a recliner for about the first 6 weeks is what I did and it worked pretty good. Make sure to stay up on ice and ibuprofen which helped the most. Also make sure to do your rehab. Practicing with your left hand is a good idea.

Get a cheap razor for Amazon.

As a guy who’s had a lot of surgeries my suggestion is you need to experiment with how to get comfortable. I’ve found that on your back can be ok but sometimes you need to brace yourself with pillows. You’ll also notice you can’t sleep in the same position all night. Sometimes start in bed and then move to a recliner.

As mentioned above…as you get off pain killers ibuprofen is key along with ice. Ice will be your best friend so get some good ice packs, especially the flat, flexible kind.

    Good luck.

Here’s hoping the surgery goes well and you get healed up in good time.

I can’t help with the sleeping stuff but the ice and ibuprofen or tylenol are good buddies and do stay in line with the rehab.

People still actually shave? I thought that went out the window during Covid.

Look into getting an “ice machine” for your shoulder. Beats ice packs. The one I used also had compression to help with the inflammation. Velcro to hold it in place, quick to connect/disconnect. They aren’t cheap, but it’s definitely falls into the category you can pay as much as you want. Amazon is full of them.

Grow a beard toast . Recliners are nice post shoulder surgery bc they keep you on your back, and the upright position helps too. Beds are fine if you don’t toss and turn too much, you’ll quickly figure out what works. Practice wiping left handed, way more difficult and important than the facial hair! rotflol

You can rent an ice machine from a home medical supply outfit. I rented one after knee replacement surgery, oit was a godsend. Turns out I am allergic to opioids, can’t use ibuprofen and tylenol doesn’t get it done. Ice machine was fantastic. Slept in the recliner, fell asleep as soon as the cold water started to circulate.

The hospital in Crosby gives you an ice machine after surgery. They gave me one for my knee and they’re gonna give me another one for my shoulder, and they don’t want them back. They just bill insurance which pays for them. Just a question about that razor that Jon recommended. Are the rotaries as close as shave as the foil ones? I did try that beard routine couple years ago and scratched like you would’ve thought I had bugs. Drove me nuts. Thanks guys. I’ll keep watching.

Oh, and as far as that comment about practice your wiping. I have been practicing, that’s why I said I wash my hands a lot more than I used to. You know, I can’t figure out why I can’t put an emoji in one of these replies. It always says that it can’t be submitted. Better help me Glenn

Friend of mine uses it with his minnow cooler to keep the water cool. Good re-use item. waytogo

Yes, it’s a close shave. And I have had a foil shaver too.

I had one for my knee and it was a godsend. I’d never mess with actual ice packs. I now have a partially torn miniscus that needs repairing but have put it off for over a year. About once a week when I push it too much and soreness/swelling sets in, I fill it with ice and leave it on for a bit and it works perfectly.

    Same surgery
    Right handed
Sat and slept in a recliner the first three days
Would NEVER take the stool medicine ever again.
Pain meds the first day and only Advil after that.
Do the PT exercise RELIGIOUSLY. Had mine in December and was using everything as normal by summer. Not cranking the boat winch w new arm but using it always.
    Range of motion is great.
Do the PT and put the shoulder in motion whenever possible. Recovery is quick and good if you follow instructions

    Oh – and running/sweatpants.

You won’t be buttoning or zipping anything for awhile.

Slip on shoes and easy on/off shirts

Just curious as to what type of surgery this is. Is it replacement surgery or more soft tissue? I was fascinated to know that replacement surgery they essentially flip the joint around. That is pretty incredible.

Captain, there are two shoulder replacement surgery’s. Total replacement and Reverse. Reverse is where they flip the ball and socket around. Both are close but they do Total when your rotator cuff is still strong and reverse if the rotator is torn up. That seems backwards to me but that’s how my doctor explained it. Been a bad year and a half for me- A total knee replacement, both hips replaced, a bout with bladder cancer(all ok there), a bladder stimulator surgery, an ankle procedure, and now a shoulder. I never even took a single prescription pill till I was 70 and will be pill free again after this shoulder has healed. Pretty sure this is the end, my other knee and shoulder look ok. I’ll be bionic after this. Another nice thing about Crosby is they haven’t put a staple in me yet. They use a tape that dissolves after about two weeks. You can shower the day after surgery with it.

Not to hijack this thread or anything but From you guys that have experience with this stuff are there some places that are better than others? About 8 years ago my girlfriend slipped getting out of the truck and messed her shoulder up, something about a lumbar fix, something with the AC? Whatever that is and some bone spurs. She had surgery to get everything fixed and it’s been down hill ever since. She’s had surgery 2 more times since to “clean things up” and each time it gets worse and worse. Now she has pain in her neck and wrist and is constantly miserable. Her last surgery was just over a year ago and she went in for more MRI’s and nobody up here wants anything to do with it. She had been going to Orthopedics associates in Duluth but since they said they are don’t trying she got referred to the U. Actually going there next Monday. She always did the PT religiously each time. Just curious if anyone has gone through this and if any places are better than others.

People come from all around the country to have Klassen for a shoulder at Crosby. One guy came from Alaska last week! Remarkable reputation for a small hospital with state of the art equipment.

Thanks. Definitely something to think about and possibly look in to. Do you know what parent company runs the hospital? Right now she is dealing with essentia.

It’s Crosby Regional Medical Ctr. Just went public a couple years ago, privately owned before that. There my chart says Alaina but may just be a contracted service. Essentia sucks!!!

Ive always heard good things about Cuyuna and friends that work their like it way better then the Brainerd Hospital. Another small town Ortho place and that is good is Little Falls ortho and they travel to other small town hospitals. I had my shoulder done by them and everything is great. Also my sister worked for them and stated they were nice to work for.
