Should I keep old truck that's not worth much?

I have a 2002 Silverado with 195K miles and a big dent on the side of the bed. I put in about a quart of oil every month. It’s the rare extended cab with full 8 foot bed. My guess is it will sell for absolute max $3K, but more likely less than that because of the dent.

I’ve put in a couple thousand the past couple years for everything but the engine. The engine is fine, except for the oil leak. It’s never let me down and I pull a very heavy 24 ft bowrider all over with no problems.

So here I am looking to finally buy a new truck, but normally you trade in your old one or sell it to put towards the cost of the new one. In this case, when I’m only looking at $2-3K, I’m just tempted to keep it for a second vehicle or who knows what. But that’s probably dumb too because it won’t be driven much and more will just break down.

What do you think? Just get rid of it? I realize part of this is likely sentimentality, too. I’ve had the truck for 15 years and been all over with it.

Fill the box with dirt and plant a vegetable garden in it. You will have a mobile bug out vehicle when things go to hell.

I purchased a new 2002 Suburban in May of 2002.
Put over 241,000 mile on it.
I also felt some ‘sentimentality’ as I considered selling the vehicle.
It was a wonderful vehicle and served me well.
But, I sold it to a family that was looking forward to using it for vacations, trips, etc.

I say, sell the vehicle unless you have a significant need for it.

I’d hold on to it and keep towing with it. If it starts to get weak in it towing ability, sell it. Heck, advertise it while you’re using it and ask for say $4000-$4500. If you get a taker then sell it because you’ll have the new one to take over, but don’t assume it’ll not get much. Trucks can get ridiculous money if the right buyer comes along.

The problem with older vehicles is if you let them sit and don’t drive them they tend to deteriorate rapidly. If you aren’t going to drive it consistently I’d get rid of it.

You’ve gotten a ton of value out of it. Take the few grand and be happy with the new one.

It’s nice to have a 2nd vehicle in case of emergencies/breakdowns but as Matt said vehicles are meant to be driven. If you don’t plan on driving it it may go to pot pretty quickly. Also assuming you keep insurance on it thats another $35-60 out the window each month.

If you have the space and you think you might use it once a week keep it. Otherwise sell. Maybe sell it to some young kid just starting out who doesn’t have a lot of coin. Will make you feel better about it

Get rid of it, just more stuff to keep up and license and insure. The savings isn’t there is you aren’t using it much.
