Should I add a kicker

Hey guys! I recently talked my dad out of his 16ft three bench aluminum boat. (wasn’t too hard since it’s been sitting in the same spot for 12 years) anyway my question is would it be a bad idea to put a 4hp kicker motor on it? It has a 20hp Mercury for a main but I plan on doing a lot of trolling and like the idea of a backup in case the main fails. What are your thoughts?

I wouldn’t. I used to have a 14 foot aluminum boat with a 25hp on it. I trolled with it all the time and could get it down to 1.2-1.5mph. I think you’d be better served getting a trolling motor instead of a kicker.

    My two cents.

That’s what I was kinda thinking but I have a spare 4hp Johnson in the garage

Try it, see if it works for you.

Was going to say probably not needed, but if you already got it…. You’re not out much by trying it. Or sell it and buy a trolling motor.

If you thought that you were going to also add an electric, just get a trolling plate for the main. When the wind kicks up, I want more control than the electric will provide.
