reports of shots fired at Plymouth Middle School. All kids are reported safe with no injuries and a suspect is in custody. School is just down the road from where my kids went to daycare/preschool and i still know quite a few people who live in that area. Glad the situation is under control and no one was hurt.

And yet there’s still an “outcry” to remove school liaison officers from our schools.

I’m curious as to where this “outcry” exists about removing liaison officers from schools here? As a coach who spends a lot of time in area schools with coaches, parents, ADs, etc. I’ve never heard anything like this except from people trying to make an issue out of nothing.

Our district has actually increased support for extending their roles here. Liaison officers help teach classes, handle some discipline, mentor students, ride busses, and one is an assistant coach. Perhaps I am missing something though from the inside roll

Mpls. and St Paul are not the only schools to have removed them. There are a few here in Central Minnesota who have also removed theirs or cut the # of them.

Will they blame the gun or the shoes he was wearing?? Because it couldn’t possibly have been a behavioral issue.

or perhaps poor parenting? We needs laws that keep kids from buying guns.

Just a FYI – There are already laws that prevent kids from buying guns. We dont need more laws for guns. They need to start by enforcing the gun laws that are already in place. Gun laws will not prevent criminals from getting guns. Criminals don’t care about laws – That’s why they are called criminals.

I would assume where you are from they hire Teachers and Coaches based on their education and Training. If you ask me a teacher should teach, a Coach should coach and a educated and trained Liaison officer or security officer should be there to deal with out of control students or a violent threat from outside the school. All it is going to take is one large shooting at one of these schools that removed security officers and every parent with a child injured or killed will be lined up to sue the school. This is just my .02 worth – Others are entitled to their opinion.

My daughter will start kindergarten this year and her little sister next year. I hope they still have armed police at school. Wish it wasnt necessary like when i grew up but obviously is now.

Beyond sad. Heartbreaking, baffling, and angering. This country is so out of control I have a hard time believing we’ll be able to turn it around. It’s a culture thing, I don’t care what anybody says. Tired of it.

We agree. No need to argue. Perhaps I phrased the duties of local liaison officers poorly.

Our liaison officers are here for all of those things you listed. They do handle out of control students or threats that could come to the district. They are in uniform and are police in the community on certain shifts. Those things you listed come first and foremost and are always what they remain on-call and ready for. However, in a 9.5 month school year there are not issues related to those things for probably 97% of the days. During other times they visit classrooms and coteach units in health classes, serve as assistant coaches after school if they have had experience in those areas (one played college football and is a great coach), supervise lunchrooms, etc. Our officers have created connections with kids that may actually prevent some of the issues they are mainly in the buildings for while also keeping the place safe.

^Many schools are doing this. There are over 5,000 schools in Minnesota. People let the handful of outliers who may have taken stances against LEO’s for various reasons cloud their judgement. I truly have not seen some “outcry” to get liaison officers out of schools (if yours does, send your kids elsewhere). Rather, I think this is just a headline thrown around by some who look to label schools without knowing what they are doing or setting foot in them. Schools and law enforcement together make a great pairing and it’s going on in a majority of schools in MN. I hope it continues.

My thoughts are guns have been in households from the time they landed on this country, the quick fix feel good thing is to ban the gun instead of trying to fix the underlying problem to begin with, I think if you waive a wand and every gun was gone, they would figure out some new way to kill each other. until they address the underlying problem, the problem will continue.

Humanity it’s self is the problem. People have been killing each other since the beginning of time. They started with stones & wood and will always use something to kill each other.

    Much more to the story:

Father of student who fired gun inside Plymouth Middle School offers apologies

    Jay Kolls

Tory Gorham told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS it was his 12-year-old son, a sixth-grade student at Plymouth Middle School, who fired a handgun inside a hallway at the school Monday morning.

The Robbinsdale School District and Plymouth police said no one was injured during the incident and the student was taken into custody.

“I would like to apologize to all the staff, students and their families for the actions of my son today,” Gorham said. “It was a cry for help. He tried suicide-by-cop. This was not racially motivated and I hope that we can get him the help that he needs to continue living his life.”

Gorham said he was unsure why his son decided to bring a handgun to school and then fire multiple rounds into the ceiling as the class change had just ended around 8:45 a.m.

“He removed the gun from my bedroom,” Gorham said. “It’s the first year of middle school. He didn’t keep in contact with friends from elementary school. The COVID. These kids are getting depressed. They have no friends. They don’t know what to do. They’re sitting on their computers. It’s starting to fry their brains.”

Gorham said he is convinced, after talking with his son Monday, that he was not targeting anyone.

“He was not intending to harm anyone, it was into the ceiling and he was waiting for the officer to fire on him,” Gorham said.

The Robbinsdale School District put out a statement that said there is no evidence to suggest the discharge of the weapon was racially motivated and there is an ongoing investigation within the school district and with the Plymouth Police Department.

Why state that it wasn’t racially motivated? Does everything have to include race these days?

Possibly because they were dispelling a rumor from earlier in the day.
