Hey guys, I’m thinking about going to Red Wing this weekend. I’ll be fishing from shore and was wondering which areas I could have good luck finding Walleyes. I’ve been reading on places and most I cant find is Bay Point Park. I appreciate your help!

There is some decent shore fishing for Walleye, but not necessarily fantastic. Your three best options would be Everts, Baypoint and Colvill Park. The break at Colvill is a little ways out there but I think you’ll be surprised how shallow some Walleyes hang out in the area. I have seen people shore fish the public launch in the WI channel by MR. Sippi, but I can’t imagine they do all that well. With the ripping current, I would just walk the shore in those places and look for a good current seam, they’re relatively easy to spot. Might be tough to find there right now.

Right now the channel in Baypoint Harbor where it meets the river channel might be your best option as you’ll have an eddy in there to help slow things down. At the other end of the park the public pier will offer similar fishing where the river meets the slack area back into the boat club.

The levee wall between the train station and grain elevators to the upstream side has a nice indent in the shoreline that can hold a lot of resting fish but lots of snags in there. Bring lots of cheap jigs.

Walleye, Schmalleye…Get yer sticks up to Duluth and fish the shore from Duluth to Two Harbors for the nice coho and kamloops. The loopers, in particular, are starting to stage there already. Especially look to fish it with a NorthEast wind.

How are the rivers up there right now JD? Moving a lot of water?

Not entirely sure about amount of flow in the rivers/creeks so much. Some discharge for sure. We were bouncing around on Sunday in the Skeeter out of McQuade Harbor and the boats that were out certainly were working the edges of all the inlets. PLENTY of shore fishermen around each and every creek, stream and river out there. We picked up 2 nice loopers and a Laker ourselves but it was pretty bouncy on Sunday so we left after 5 hours or so.

I would stop and take a peek into the Coleville landing and see if the ice is gone just downstream of the marina. Usually a good spot in the spring. Easy access to that shore as well as the park grounds are low to the river.

I would like to go fishing in Duluth sometime! Definitely my favorite place to be. I tried fishing there last year but had no luck. I wasn’t to sure where to fish it.

There is a nice harbor just a few miles north of Duluth called McQuade. You can bobber fish in the harbor or just off the break walls in the main lake. Then just south of McQuade is the Lester River. You can fish off that river. North of the McQuade harbor are many smaller streams but try French River up a little further. And when I say River, I mean, you will fish the Superior shoreline just outside the river unless you are into river fishing. But that’s a different story.

Toss out one line on a bobber with a spawn sack of eggs and throw around any other cast and retrieve bait for your second line in to the main lake. See http://www.kamloopsadvocates.org/ for some more details.

Pretty easy to fish these areas and no new knowledge or gear is needed.
