Getting my Walleye ice rods & reels ready for the up coming season, my question is what do you use to clean shiner scales off them with other than warm water and dish soap? Those tiny scales are on there like nail polish is there any special method you use?

Mr. clean magic erasers work great for cleaning up cork handles.

They don’t come off, which I actually like.

not being a smart arse, dunk the rod in the water after each use and wipe them down.

I know,I know, thats too much work, kind of like cleaning a bbg grill when done cooking, thats why we use half a bottle of lighter fluid next time right???
or is it just me?? peace

Me too, gives a rod character. I like it when trout scales are a permanent part of a fly rod too…

I just cleaned my rods and reels the other day from 4 days of perch fishing on Lake Erie with emerald shiners. I used the scotch brillo pads and dawn for the cork handles and rod blank and I used a brush the wife had in the kitchen that looks like a huge tooth brush with stiff bristles for the Shimanos. I dunked the reels then let sit for 5 minutes to loosen up the scales a little then used the brush. All cleaned up great. The cork handles look like new. The Dawn really seemed to loosen up the scales too.

Not to high jack your thread but how was the perch fishing? Where did you go out of?

MX it was unbelievable we would have our 60 perch in less than 3 hrs every day. Very good avg size also. We had some over 13″ a lot of 11-12″. We launched out of Mazuricks and fished the NE side of Kelly’s 38.5 ft of water. By Wed there was quite a pack in that area. We brought home 180 perch. We take our fish to the cleaners they do a beautiful job.

Sorry to butt in/hijack, but I was wondering what the fish cleaners charge for perch there? 180 perch would be a pain for me, as I hate cleaning them.

    Thanks – T

Thanks Glenn. Our group was planning on heading to Huron last Thurs. night walleye fishing. With the weather report we scraped the trip. Our contacts out there had walleye limits in 2 to 3 hours. We planned on going after perch after/if we got our eye limits. 38 to 40 feet was the depth to fish perch we were told. Sounds like you had them dialed in. Way to go.
