Had a fairly new reel lockup on me(year or so), took it apart entirley and for the life of me can’t figure out what’s wrong. No sand, no grit, no visible wear on gears, reverse and all looks good.

Can gears just slowly wear down where it’s not noticable but collectively it shuts down?

With the colder temps yesterday I had two start getting stiff. Time for a cold weather oil change. Little early for fresh line to. I like to change that line a little closer to freezing temps as fresh line seems to be the most water resistant.

My reels are sedonas. 4 years old to. Might just be worn out and time for new ones.

I would look at redoing the grease to a cold temp grease before replacing the reel.

My Sahara’s do that regularly. No clue what the issue is. I have 2 different generations and they both do the same damn thing. I won’t ever buy another one.

To me it feels like binding due to excessive clearance somewhere in the reel.

    Grease got replaced right away.

Really like the smoothness of these reels but this kinda sucks. Changed over from Purists but they at least lasted year and half or so.

Catching less fish equals less wear & tear on the equipment.

I seldom have reel issues but then i don’t catch many fish either. grin

I’ve purchased my last Shimano until they decide to make some changes. I have a whole box full of 1-2 yr old Shimanos that are ready for the garage sale at some point. Weak bail springs and stiff gears are unacceptable after such a short amount of time. Granted they do get used, but they should last much longer IMO.

On a brighter note… my Quantum’s are rock sold. I purchased a half doz of them (April of 2016) off of a friends recommendation and all I can say is wow. I haven’t greased, regreased or modified these in any way. They flat out just stay smooth and work flawlessly. I’ll be buying 6 more for my Lindy rods next year. For the guys like me that would rather fish than take their reels apart, I’d recommend Quantum’s.

    Goodbye Shimano!

I bought a Quantum Smoke Speed freak a couple years ago and I’m much happier than I was with the Sahara’s I have.

I will say though the Stratic Ci4 I won in a fishing contest is my favorite reel after 1 full season.

I had a saros do that. There was a blue rubber dust cover under the rotor that was coming out of it’s groove and locking it up. I deleted the cover 2 years ago. No issues. Not the best solution, but it was that or the trash bin.

Which quantum you go with Joe?

Not looking to spend more than a hundred. If I could get a couple years out of $60-80 reel I’m happy.

Since you mentioned that I do seem to remember and o ring in some of my reels that swells or sticks out causing the binding.

Quantum Team KVD KVD25PTIA 5.2 1 Gear Ratio Spinning Fishing Reel

I picked em up on sale for $99.99 ea.

In all seriousness the drags should be blown out of these reels by now. I use these reels on my multipurpose walleye and smallmouth rods. Over the past three years to my closest estimate these things have reeled in over 3300 drag screaming smallmouth and I’m only half way through this smallmouth season.

I have friends with other Quantum models and they seem equally as happy, so I’m hoping my next six are just as awesome.

I believe the part is called a friction ring. It adds enough friction to prevent the weight of the reel handle from closing the bail when you cast. It’s only a couple dollars to replace. I’ve seen it mentioned in the past that using solvent cleaners and different grease may be the cause of the issues.

Sometimes it is the rubber water seal on the inside of the bail.
I have replaced those many times on Shimanos.

    What model is it?
