The girlfriend and I went to the hunting land last weekend in hopes of finding some morrels. We never knew what to look for but after some coaching from Joel we thought we could give it a shot. She is very interested in sustainable food and foraging so this had potential to be a fun day in the woods .
We only spent a few hours looking for pockets of elm trees and never did find a morrel (or a dieing elm), but she was able to find a box full of fiddleheads in the right stage for picking so we were not going back to the truck empty handed. The 4 wheeler was parked near one of our destination plots away from the truck so she started up the hill and I went to the quad. Business as usual, no big deal, got to the truck, pulled the quad on the trailer and started to strap it down. She then comes to the side of the trailer with her hand in the Summer Shandy box full of fiddleheads and tells me she has a gift for me . First thought was morrel, second was an ice cold beer and before the third could form she pulls the small 4 point out of the box with a giant smile on her face.
2012 was the year I found my first shed and she has endured plenty of talks about how it is unbelievably amazing to find one of these horns on the ground laying there like a gift with a bow on it. The look on her face was proud and priceless and she says she has not seen a smile that big on my face in far too long! She apoligized for picking it up without taking a picture first but said she knew exactly where it was, could not control it and “knows the other side should be close.” She actually listens when I babble on and on about whitetails!
We walked back down the trail to where she picked it up and started looking, found the other side within 60 seconds and hugged it out before our atl pick.
It is no beast but it is the best set I could hope for.
Only picture is the second shed but if I can find a picture of the buck I will update this later on.
