My Canadian Shed Hunting Trip

This past week I was fortunate enough to spend 3 days hiking with well known fishing and hunting guide Jeff Gustafson of Kenora, Ont. It was some of the most incredible hiking that I have ever done, very rugged and remote areas with a lot of big bucks! The nice part about hunting for sheds in northern areas like this is that you can find 4-5 year old antlers that aren’t chewed to pieces, and if you’re lucky enough you might even find consecutive years off the same buck. We put on about 10 miles a day and ended up with almost 35 whitetail sheds and 1 moose paddle. The biggest shed measured 74.5 inches and we got a good hand full over 50”. Here are some pictures from the trip, hope you like them. If anybody is interested in a trip like this or really any type of guided fishing/hunting in the Kenora area I would highly recommend getting ahold of Gussy or check out his website at http://www.gussyoutdoors.com

What an experience I started going to ontario in the late 80’s and fell in love with the wilderness and ways of the old trappers and guides. Thanks for sharing your trip with us

What a cool experience Mark. Big country, big sheds….what can I say, it just doesn’t get any sweeter than that. Love the knobby based shed, what cool character. Congrats on your finds What did you end up doing to get them back across the border?

Thanks guys, it would be fun to put a trip together for next year…I’ll be going back for sure!
To get sheds across the border there are a few different routes that you can go. You do have to go by the regulations of the US Fish and Wildlife service and the USDA, along with MN and Ontario DNR laws. All of these agencies basically agree that 4 or less sheds are acceptable to bring across with only a wildlife declaration form. 5+ and you will need permits and inspections from both sides…it would be $200-300 or more and alot of work. I decided to keep my best few sheds and go the easy route…
