Was up to the farm on the 3/5 chomping at the bit to look for sheds. When I arrived at our property my hope dwindled. Snow cover on the ground was going to be a problem. I thought it would be a good opportunity to check the camera and do a little scouting as long as I had made the trip. Headed out to the Cameras early Saturday morning. Had not been up to check on the cameras since early Dec. I figured the batteries would be dead, low and behold I was wrong. Took one camera down to relocate. I returned to the camper to charge up the batteries. While the batteries were charging i reviewed pictures. WOW I had two dandies on the camera after the gun seasons had closed. Can’t wait till this fall to see what kind of head gear these guys will have. Once the batteries were charged I headed out to hang the camera in a new location, perfect time to head through the little lake swamp and look for sheds. I entered the swamp scanning the ground( SNOW) I noticed this large black furry blob, did a double take and realized it was a bear that decided to curl up under a small downed tree. This bear didn’t spend alot of time looking for his den. I slid around on the down wind side and slid in for a closer look, at about 20 feet the bear must have heard me in the crunchy snow. He lifted his head sluggishly and peered my direction. I froze not know what he was going to do, after a few minutes he was content and curled back up in to a ball to wait out the rest of the winter. All I had was my phone camera. If you look closely you can see his brown muzzle and his ears sticking up in the one picture. I might head up there again next weekend, might have to sneak in and see if he’s still sleeping away the winter in the little lake swamp.

Those are great pictures. Wonder how much rest a bear can get exposed in the open like that! That is a great looking buck too…can’t wait to see what he looks like this year!

Great pics! The bear is definitely something you don’t get to see everyday, never would have thought they’d pick such an exposed spot. Thanks for sharing

Awesome pics most bears in my area find a low spot or a dead fall and just curl up and go to sleep. One year We had one den under the cabin

I’ve seen this one other time, about 10 years ago we found a bear den, with a bear in it during the gun season.
That bear decided to make like a big bird nest in a swamp with a lot of canary grass pulling the grass up around him with just the top of his back sticking out of the top. That bear didn’t like the fact that we found him. He jumped and ran, thank god away from me.
Trust me you are not going to out run a bear is he decided to come your way. It was amazing how fast he was. He didn’t go around stuff either they go straight throw the tangled up mess with out slowing down.
