Well the shed antler season started off with a bang on the 12th of January. I really had no intention of doing any shed hunting but decided to take the snowmobile up to my family’s farm to hang a trail cam. I came through an area that was tore up with deer sign and slowed down a bit to see if I could spot any deer bedded on the hillsides. Happened to spot the tell tale row of tines sticking out of the snow just a few feet from the snowmobile trail. Instantly I knew it was a good one. As I picked it up I looked back down the trail and seen another one right on the edge of the snowmobile trail. No ATL’s as I didn’t have a camera but I did toss them in my field to give BB some excitement. A few hero shots with BB and an in the house shot for size reference. 76″ and a 60″, unfortunately I’m not sure that I will be keeping these in my collection as I know the landowner and I’m pretty sure that he wants them. Being that the snowmobile trail is a priviledge and not a right I’ll probably be forking them over to him when he comes down to his land in the spring for some shed hunting of his own. Whatever comes of it I guess I’m just happy to have found them.

It’s been a long couple of months waiting for some snow to melt but this warmup has finally made it feasable to pull some bone. Sunday I hiked for 5 hours with my cousin hoping to get him on his first shed. We covered lots of ground that has been holding deer and I’m sure holds some sheds but after 3 hours of walking we hadn’t found squat. We met up on top of a ridge and we were BS’ing when I looked in front of Ryan and seen a tine poking out about 5 feet in front of him. BB managed to step on it without noticing it too The only find of the day but at least we didn’t get skunked.

Today I headed out with BB to a farm that has always produced for me and once again it didn’t dissapoint. There wasn’t alot of deer sign but after an hour or so I came across a small 3 point laying across the trail. The second one was all BB! I seen her dive her head straight into deep snow on the side of a trail and after some digging she popped out with a real chunky 3 point. The last find was along the fieldedge laying in a bed. Would have been a nice 4 point but the brow was broken off. All in all a good day and there’s plenty of light yet to hit a few more spots after lunch.

Wednesday morning I got together with my buddy Eric and his dog Cinder which is BB’s mother. This winter he took his dog down to Missouri to the famous “antler dogs” trainer and had Cinder trained to find sheds. She proved that she learned something by finding this nice 3 point without a browtine. We pounded lots of ground but only managed the one.

This morning after work I got together with a crew from work and walked a section of ground that the landowner has been having perpetual problems with shed poachers. He wanted us to clean out a ridgeline so at least he would get to see what was out there and prevent them from walking away in the hands of a trespasser. I managed to pick up the first, a 4 point laying beam up! A short ways further down the ridgeline BB came running with another 4 point. In 2 hours of walking the 7 of us with 2 dogs came up with 5 fresh sheds. I didn’t get a day ending shot as I was about comatose from being up all night working.

Last night I made it out for a short walk before dark. Picked up this old one in the only bare spot I found.

I walked from daybreak till noon today….wanted to keep slugging through the snow but the blister on my toe is telling me otherwise. After only 15 minutes or so picked up a broken 4 point laying beam up. After gridding the area I took off towards a thin strip of woods and just past a creek crossing I come across the tips of tines just barely poking through the snow….turned out to be a mainframe 4pt. with a split g2. An hour or so later I ran into the 3 point with out a brow that BB decided to step on for the ATL pic. I covered the ridgeline of a north facing slope for a good while before coming to an area of blowdowns. Managed to find the real nice 5 point that will probably go over 60″ and the funky 4 point with a bladed out mainbeam. I’m all smiles today and may put some duct tape on my toe and hit it again yet this afternoon. Good luck everyone, get em’ before we get dumped on again.
