I tried out PP about 10 years ago and never have found a reason since then to switch. For larger catfishing setups 65-80# it has no peer. I think smaller diameters it gets down more to personal pref. I found fireline to fray and tangle too much and I haven’t tried a lot of the new stuff. PP also ties well and I like to use the Palomar knot. I can tie that in the dark.

ditto on Power Pro–I use the lighter lines 6# 10# 2# never a issue–and also once used a year i spool it on another reel even so your using it over from the unused part of the spool–I dont use backing but thats a personal choice.

bailey99Posts: 253March 19, 2008 at 4:13 pm #667017Here is my experience over the years:
Fireline: a “stiff” line, flat too. Repels water, but frays really bad and doesn’t hold its color (fades).
Good trolling line for open water and weeds. 10lb or less can be very “brittle”, knots breaking way too easy.Powerpro: Soft line, but it has a tendency to “bite” into the spool on the smaller sizes. If the spool isn’t wound “excessively” tight, problems occur with both backlash and the line biting into the spool of all sizes. Also, some colors fade excessively. Good trolling line and holds up better around rocks than fireline.
Spiderwire Stealth: I put this in the middle of Fireline and Powerpro. Very forgiving on spooling and holds up to abrasion as well as Power pro. But spools better than power pro. Much stiffer than power pro, which makes pitching/casting a little “difficult”. Stiff like Fireline. Doesn’t absorb water as bad as powerpro, but more than Fireline.
Original Spiderwire. Still my all time favorite. Softer than fireline and more abrasion resistent. Spools better than Powerpro and more forgiving. Almost “too soft” and limp, where casting can catch the line around a guide on the rod and snap off your lure. Not good because of that.
Trolling: It is good to have abrasion resistent lines when needed. It is also good to have a “stiffer” line when needed. (fireline, stealth)
Casting/pitching: Good to have a limper line that is more abrasive resistent (powerpro, Original Spiderwire).
I haven’t had the opprotunity yet to use Suffix or Stren, but I haven’t heard anything negative about them yet!
March 19, 2008 at 4:17 pm #667019I am mostly looking for a super line for flipping and pitching along with fishing frogs in heaving cover. Thus my concern about a stiff line vs a softer limper line.
March 19, 2008 at 5:38 pm #667045I mainly use Power Pro for those purposes and love the way it handles. Flipping and pitching it is soft enough that it just comes right off the spool without memory. Frog fishing I use 65 lbs test and it casts a mile and tough as nails. I also use lighter line on a spinning rod for skipping docks and never have problems. It also cuts weeds great once you get a pig hooked and digging in the millfoil.
Good luck.
March 19, 2008 at 10:11 pm #667132I use Power pro for casting and Fireline for trolling. Power Pro is a bit limper and seems to cast a little better. Fireline is more abrasive resistant which lends itself well to the areas I like to troll.
March 19, 2008 at 10:55 pm #667149I am currently using SpiderWire Stealth 50#, SpiderWire Ultracast 20#, and Power Pro 50#. They are all tough as nails and will pull a fish out of any cover. I have noticed that the Power Pro and Ultracast do seem to cast better with fewer backlashes.
March 21, 2008 at 12:14 am #667641I want to thank everyone for providing me their opinion. I got a lot of great information. The reason I like this site so much is I know that I can post a question like this and get straight answers from fishermen that have used these products not a sales pitch.
Thanks alot, hope to see you on the water

Pretty cool video
February 17, 2010 at 1:58 pm #77356Looks like it’s easier than the old bed spring trick. Burying a 5 gallon bucket flush with the ground works well too.
