Sharpening Pistol Bit Blades – Success

A week ago I made a post about completing trashing my Pistol Bit blades.

I accidentally drilled into a frozen in truck salt/sand booger, the auger stopped drilling instantly. Couldn’t get through another inch even with all of my weight on it.

A lot of guys say it’s impossible to make an auger blades sharp again at home, but I’ve done it before with Lazer Blades.

This was my first attempt at re-sharpening Pistol Bit blades and they turned out awesome.

My method is using a Dremel with a sandpaper flap wheel and wool polishing discs, you can also strop on leather but the wool works better.

It’s pretty simple and takes 10 minutes or so on each blade.

Follow the factory bevel (both sides on Eskimo, just the top on Lazers). Work the edge until you have a “burr” just big enough to feel and see. Again, only on the top of Lazers, but with Pistol Bits you work one side until you get a burr, then work the other to roll the burr back.

Finish by working the burr off with the wool discs until it’s gone and your blades will cut just like new waytogo

I don’t have a video of the process, but here’s the end result (taken just today)

The kids are still learning how to drill holes but they are starting to get the technique down.

A little later we had an auger race: Pistol Bit w/12ah battery vs. 40V Lite-Flite.

The damn 10 year old still beat the ice fishing veteran running who was running the 40V (me) lol

(working on uploading that video right now)

Good to know! Thanks for the tip. My lazer blades are about due to get replaced but I’ll definitely give it a try. Your lucky you don’t have near as much ice where your at than we do way up in Northern Minnesota. There’s going to be ice forever.

We were fishing on the St. Louis river (current), guessing there was 14-15″. The last time I drilled on an inland lake there was over 2′ of ice and a bunch of snow.

Ahhhhhh that explains it. We fished on Saturday and barely got through drilling holes for in the portable. Probably wouldn’t get through after last night and today. Going to put my extension in my truck now before I forget it at home again. Big derby day on Saturday, have to be prepared.

These blades are very similar to the E40 blades. Once I played with them, I could get them near shaving sharp with a 600 grit diamond stone. Little pressure is required to make them chew up ice.
