Definitely notice a difference with larger holes vs the little 5 inch holes When fishing the backwaters. Especially when the fish are holding right under the ice. Did you notice a difference?

Put this hat set up over the hole last Saturday when the sun was high an it didn’t take long to get the fish to come into the hole again !!

Koonce has been telling me about the advantages of a smaller hole for years.
I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to type that with a straight face. As it turns out… I pulled it off.
That sounds familiar, I run a 6″ Nils and get so much grief for running a 6. I chase panfish and believe me there are big pike that eat those little jigs…Nils also leaves a hole with more slush then most which I usually leave some in when sun is high. Good tip Dave.
I also run a 6″ nils because a 5″ is to small! I fish petenwell and castlerock, along with lake koshkonong! Leave some slush in the hole to reduce light penetration. Guys whom fish lakes rivers with giant crappies, bass, walleyes, catfish all know why a 5″ is to small anyhow!
That’s a great idea, and I don’t have to carry anything extra on the ice with me. I tend to leave a lot of ice in my holes to help cut light but I know there are times I miss a few fish because of it.
I know a guy who once pulled a 15″ busier crappie thu a 5″ hole !!
One of those rare times I enjoyed being oh so very wrong.
Here is Higgins lake shining her light on me. This hole produced my very first laker in 90 fow! I know its not shallow but i’m not sure if the dark hole contributed to my success that day or not. Are lake trout leary of light? I think reducing light may be a good practice all around unless you’re targeting fish that like to eat the micro organism such as zooplankton like smelt etc… Im going to try this next time i’m fishing in the shallows.
Not only light, but possibly a high riding crappie may see movement overhead, between the large hole and refraction. Leaving slush in the hole creates line drag and disrupts both the fall of light lures and the detection of my favorite sight, the “up bite.”
my last trip out the ice was maybe 20+ ” I got lazy and used the 10″ lazer mag didn’t take duke to long to point out the error of my ways we went back to the 5″ hand auger and didn’t clean the hole very well, no doubt fishing got a whole lot more fun! still healing up duke but I will be back to see ya thanks B GRIFFIS
There’s a reason why a lot of the old timers always liked a little slush in there holes, geez i hope i didn’t open up another can of worms, but you get the jest of it
