When the season started out, we could do no wrong. Fish were caught on basically every one of my proven spots, as long as a light jig and shiner minnow were presented. As the days progressed, the bite windows became shorter and many spots held fish with lock-jaw, so a bit more persistence was required. Those primary community haunts are now giving way to secondary summer spots. Having a milk run of good spots and not wasting too much time trying to force feed neutral fish has been the key to maximizing your time out there.
Last week, the water rose 15 inches and the temps dropped 10 degrees. In the coming days we can continue to factor in perch spawn, shiner runs, molting crayfish, midge hatch, fish fly hatch, Hex Mayfly hatch and on, and on…this is one complex system and finding and catching Walleyes in it can be very rewarding.
