Serious Gortex Rain Gear

    Hi everyone,

I’m heading to Canada twice this summer, and I’m due for a new gortex rain suit. I’ve been looking at the Simms Prodry jacket and bibs. I’ve also checked out the Cabelas Guide Wear angler jacket and pants. Both are pretty spendy. The problem I ususally have, is the sleeve length. I’m not a large built guy. Just normal, but I’m 6’1″ tall and about 195 lbs. My arms are long, and the sleves on most things push me into a large tall size.

Thoughts anyone? I don’t want to spend more than $1000.00 on the suit if possible.

It’s going to cost you at least $1,400 for a rain suit since your body is weird shaped j/k

I have to ask though, what does going to Canada twice have anything to do with your rain gear size? Do they fit different up there?

The reason I’m buying new rain gear, is because of the trips. Otherwise, I would wait a year or two. I’m just reaching out for opinions from you guys. Perhaps someone else has had issues with sizing, and has some good adivse. That’s all I’m looking for. Good advise and opinions.

Rain gear fits the same in Wisconsin as is does in Ontario. But thanks for asking.

I’d find places nearby to try them on if possible. Or at least somewhere online with free returns.

To add a couple more options for you the BassPro 100mph line is pretty great, as is the Gill brand if you have any place nearby that sell them.

No experience with the Simms raingear, but I do have experience with Frogg Toggs, Cabela’s Dry Plus and Cabela’s Goretex Guidewear. For anytime I know I’m facing more than a light sprinkle it’s the Guidewear. Been using it for years and the only place I get a little wet is at the wrists and the neck, but that’s gonna happen with any brand. I’m 6’2′ 210 and I went with the XL-Tall parka so I can layer under it in cold weather. I have heard good reviews on the Simms stuff but it’s a bit more expensive than the Guidewear.

I bought a marmot suit and absolutely love it. Last year at the boundary waters it rained the entire time. I was never wet once. Neither was anything in my pockets. It ran about 700 bucks. I never sweat in it due to non breathing materials and it’s very comfortable. I also have a mountain hardware set that I love

I have the same problem you do. I’m about 6 foot 1 175 lbs and have long arms. I have the cabelas guide wear in a large tall and it fits great. They are very high quality.

The BassPro Shops Pro Qualifier series (The one right below the top of the line 100mph series) is a great set and at a good price point.

6′ 2″ 210 lb. Cabelas offers tall sizes in their goretex guide wear. I’ve had a pair of the insulated bibs for 7 years. I just bought some scheels outfitter non insulated bibs, as they have started offering tall sizes as well. They are currently on sale.
Before finding the scheels bibs, I was looking at bass pro as they offer tall sizes as well.

This is one good option, looking at the tall sizes of the highest end store brand gear, I usually look for the XLT in Cabela’s sizing for the best fit to layer under.

The other is to look at high end ski shells at places like REI, Backcountry, Sierra Trading Post etc. These tend to have a more athletic fit than fishing jackets and you can find great deals if you look for discontinued models/styles/colors; the jacket I have right now is a Black Diamond that retailed for $600, got it on clearance for $200.

Hope this helps, good luck with what you decide.

I’m 6’5″ and 250. I have Cabelas GW set 2xlt. Fits great over sweatshirt but it is too warm for July/August fishing here in Central Wisconsin. I wear it spring and fall. It is 15 years old and still keeps me dry.
